Anyone want a new state park?

I’m just surprised Ellison or some other billionaire hasn’t snapped it up.

I’d love for it to become public land, but not necessarily a state park. If it truly is mostly untouched it’s got to be a great piece of habitat for wildlife. I’d be happy if it were made a Wilderness area or wildlife refuge where people willing to walk in could go enjoy the landscape without all the modern mess that comes with development. Also, you can’t hunt in state parks and I am selfishly wanting a chance to hunt there.

A couple things. The state would put down $20 Million, the Nature Conservancy would contribute $30 Million and the rest would be made up with donations.

Don't expect motor vehicles to be allowed.

Still, an amazing sized piece of pristine land that isn't desert.

It's being marketed to billionaires.

What's interesting is that the property is not a contiguous blob (there are continuous parts to be sure), but its really a checkerboard of parcels.

I don't know how much money a cattle ranch brings in, but I'm guessing that the commercial return on operations from a 72M investment, aren't really great.

That'd be a great area to do some fracking! There's a family over there that sucks and it'd be nice to give them all cancer.

If I can not use the park for off-roading, mountain biking or hiking with a dog I don't care about it. I am tired of large tracts of land that can not be used by the public.

My bet would the land would sit there for 20 years due to maintenance costs.

I'd be pleased to see more public land. I think it would be better if it could end up under the jurisdiction of the EBRPD, but I don't think they have the resources to manage a park that size.

I'm sure they have a bond measure to remedy that!

My deal is that the minute it becomes "your" state park, a buncha weenies will hate on the cattle that keep it from becoming a fire conflagration then it, too, will now be the next fire headline because you hate meat and methane or whatever.

At least EBPRD still wisely uses cows, even though some users hate 'em.

I used to feel the same as you. Until I started gaining access for work to large tracts private land. They are typically much more pristine and better managed for wildlife than any public land is. I hope it becomes a state park. I hope it remains largely off-limits to the public to do what we do with public lands (which is to largely destroy it)..

I think they only problem people really have with the cattle is that they decimate the fire roads when it's muddy. At least that's the only problem I have :laughing

Yeah, I think the move is toward more fencing. This already started a long time ago regarding water features, with fencing built to keep em out of creeks.

Oddly enough, in my hood, Wildcat Canyon, the dog walkers seem to do more damage to the vernal ponds than the cattle. There used to be healthy populations of tadpoles and frogs even amidst the cow tracks. But now I see several people who regulalry bring a bunch of pooches to run through said pools. The frogs seem kind of gone anymore. I live about two blocks away from northern entrance and have walked there for years.

The cattle are pulled off the range after a fairly short period, the dogs are year round. THough, in fairness, the ponds dry up by mid April anyway.

I hope someone buys it and leaves it as-is.

If the .gov acquires it, I hope they designate it as a wilderness, have a permit system, no motor vehicles, etc. Otherwise, it's fucked. You may as well burn it to the ground.

Would the best solution be to manage Public lands as well as Private lands? Would more resources put towards managing public lands keep them on par with private lands?

EBRPD and their anti bike policies can eat a bag of dicks. Burn it to the ground if the public that pays for it gets to use it? That makes sense. Because it’s clearly impossible to manage land so that all forms of recreation are sustainable...

Hmm, wonder what water rights that come with the property? Ask yourself who would benefit from these?

I've dealt with the Nature Conservancy before and have seen how they have managed some properties for the State and was not impressed.

Build a Super Walmart, a Dave N Buster's, and a Chik Fiilet right across the street from a Popeye's. Oh, and it probably needs an 8 Lane highway to get there and a few gas stations.

I like byke's idea of fracking. Could probably fund the highway that way.

We shouldn't be using public money to buy private land. The State can't even afford to maintain the parkland we already have. Dumb idea.
