Anyone noticing panic buying of meat after Tyson ran a full page ad sure to lead to panic buying?

Thankfully I just signed up with a monthly meat subscription with nearby Sonoma Meat Company that buys locally grown high quality meat.

We used to get all of our meat at Costco, but for the time being I want to avoid all the lining up involved there and support a local business and local farmers.

Runs about 10 bucks/pound for the 10 pound butcher box + two 3.25 pound chickens we'll get each month, so hardly "expensive."

Just wondering what the meat departments are looking at in grocery stores now.

To me this move by Tyson was ill advised.

"In a full page ad that appeared in Sunday's edition of The New York Times, the chairman of the board of Tyson Foods, John H. Tyson, wrote that "the food supply chain is breaking.""

They're trying to drum up support against forced plant closures. Dunno if that has merit but I expect it should be taken case by case and not with blanket edicts.

I think panic buying of meat will happen soon enough, regardless of the ad.

Irresponsible of Tyson.
How about 'strategic' of Tyson?

Never count out the possibility of Greed with big companies like that.

Panic buying of meat will very likely happen, now. There will probably also be a shortage of large freezer's too.

Soooooo, you're saying I should buy $1,000 worth of toilet paper? Because it sounds like you're saying I need to buy $1,000 worth of toilet paper.

Nah, the good thing about meat is that is has a relatively short shelf life.

That won't stop people from buying freezer's and filling them, people can be very selfish and with the recent shortages will anticipate a meat shortage.

I'm not going to change anything, if meat gets short, I'll make do with other stuff.

It doesn't matter whether it's a valid shortage or not, it can be a self-fulfilling prophecy and I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be purely manipulation for profit.

Sonoma Meat Company rocks. I love their house made hot dogs. I go there when I want to treat myself to a good chunk of beef.

We bought a new place last year (in Miramonte just up the hill from you!) and part of the plan was to get a smallish freezer since it's about an hour away from any big grocery stores. We finally got the garage situated enough last week to explore purchasing options. Super bad timing on my part. Spent about 2 hours on the phone calling Appliance Parts Distributor, Airport Appliance, Sears Outlet (called something else now,) Lowe's, Home Depot and a few others... no freezers to be had anywhere. I was checking the SF Bay Area and the Fresno area, and any stores on all routes between the two. No luck.

So. Tyson food got what it really wanted....an executive order to release it from all liability...now it can take a course that is best for profits but sucks for it's employees, but hey with unemployment so high they can just replace the ones that get sick.

Wow, that is surprising to be honest.

I believe he worked for Hormel for a few decades before he retired.
I would really like to hear his input on this.

we were in a similar situation - not new home, but situating the garage to make room for a freezer (our kitchen one was bursting at the seams). timing bad for us as well - we ordered one on a wednesday, and it was supposed to be delivered the following saturday (this was mid january). saturday came and went - and multiple scheduled and cancelled deliveries followed. all subsequent communication was direct from the factory (advising of estimated delivery based on when the unit was being built). finally received it last monday. being pissed at the delay a month ago i tried to order a different model and earliest delivery they estimated was late july for the high end (super expensive) models, and september for the reasonabaly priced ones.

If ranchers are really digging mass graves for their livestock they can't take to market, I'd be down to go halfsies on a cow with someone and process it at home. That'd be enough beef for about a year.

I don't believe that is happening in our area.

Wow...crazy! I had planned on just calling APD and ordering one. Guess I should do that sooner rather than later. We don’t need anything huge or fancy, just big enough to keep our trips down the hill to the grocery store to a minimum. It’s a 2 hour round trip plus shopping.

I would really like to hear his input on this.

I will give you what Hormel is doing. One small co-packing plant was closed for 14 days because of a high amount of Covid-19 in the area. The big plants are taking precautions.

The biggest plant in Austin MN.

“Since COVID has started, we’ve put a kind of a multi-layer approach for our interventions. When you first come in the plant each and every day, we’ll give you a temp check. We’re temp-checking 100 percent of employees as they walk in the front door,” said Hormel Foods Austin Plant Manager Clint Walters.

Hormel Foods has also taken steps to make sure employees aren’t gathering in locker rooms and break rooms as they begin their workday.

“Once you get down to the floor and go to your production area, then you’ll be donning a face mask. 100 percent of the people wear a face mask to work each and every day. Many people are wearing a face shield in addition to that, that they will then put over their face and face mask. Then, you’ll work now in your work area, maybe partitioned off with what we call our Plexiglas or plastic dividers between areas where specifically they can’t create social distance on the line. Now you have multi-layers of protection when you come into work each and every day,” Walters said.

Largest Jenny-O turkey plant.

"With roughly 1,200 team members employed at the Jennie-O Turkey Store processing plant in Barron, COVID-19 is a real concern. News 18 learned what steps the company is taking to prevent spreading the virus.

Jennie-O officials said they started talking about ways to combat COVID-19 in late January, and in early March, they began implementing extra safety precautions.

Barron plant manager Chad Nisbit said employees normally worked three to four feet apart, but lately they’ve been practicing social distancing and doing extra sanitation.

“Everyone in the facility right now has safety glasses, cotton masks,” said Nisbit. “We are also in the process this week, we’ve gotten face shields that employees can wear on their helmets. Those are items that we are testing.”

And if a team member does catch the coronavirus, they will be compensated.

“In mid-March, we rolled out a program, that is a COVID-paid program, so that if employees are sick, we’re asking them to stay home and we will pay them for staying home because their welfare and the welfare of their fellow team members is that important to us,” said Richard Carolson, vice-president of quality management for Hormel Foods, the parent company of Jennie-O.

Jennie-O installed 75 to 80 plastic barriers in the Barron plant’s cafeteria to visually remind employees about social distancing. Carlson said employees are not required to eat alone, but if they do eat within less than six feet of each other, he said they should have a barrier between them."

Hormel has been buying meals from local Austin Mn restaurants. Giving to senors and need in the local area.

Tyson and their ilk made me a vegetarian. Mostly. Filet mignon. Pork loin. Salmon. Yum. In small quantities.

Michael Polen’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, also changed my food sourcing drastically.

Edit: nice to see Hormel doing the right thing. Prolly. Doing the right thing is almost certainly the most economic thing in the mid to long term. That is not how all corporations operate all the time. Or so I have heard.

Foster Farms has about 12,000 workers in Turlock and points south. They're normally insanely careful about infection and I haven't heard anything but this could hit locally too.
