Anyone have an inside scoop on Calaveras Road?

It's been closed for at least a year and half, which is a shame since it's a great looking road and close by.

A couple months ago, I saw an article saying it was opened, but when I drove up there, the barricades were still up.

Anyone know how the repairs are coming and when it's planned to be open? Can't wait to try it out :ride

Well damn. Was it a good road?

I've never had a chance to ride it, since it closed before I moved to the BAy.

It's still a good road. All the fun stuff is open, just ride from Milpitas until you get to the gate and then turn around.

How far up is the gate? Google Maps won't even let me turn onto the road coming from the southern end.

Google is your friend. Road was open weekends and holidays until a landslide last year. When they fix the landslide they will reopen it on weekends and holidays.

The Closure of Calaveras Road to thru traffic between Milpitas and Sunol has been extended to September 30, 2018.

The road had also been closed on weekends and holidays because of a land slide that undermined the road within the closure section. We anticipate the road to reopen for weekend use sometime in 2018. Please keep checking back for schedule details.

This is due to storm damage along this stretch of road. Under normal conditions and the construction schedule, Calaveras Road would be open to thru traffic on weekends and holidays. However, this is no longer the case, and the road will remain closed every day to all traffic until further notice.
Please avoid this area and use alternative routes.

Here's what Calaveras is like, this was probably filmed shortly before they closed it =P It's a nice road but its like a 1.5 lane road, it sketchy in car but more fun on a moto. Hah I bet they're just using it as a private drift course now.

More than 6 miles. It's a good time. Worth the trip south.

So everywhere around the red section is open? I know I rode up from Felter Road not too long ago and there was a sign blocking the road saying no through traffic or something. So it's okay to just go around the sign?

My group did, no problems.

Yeah, it says "no thru traffic 6 miles ahead." You just ride around that sign and go until you hit the closed gate at the dam.

kewl, would mean less traffic also. When it dries up the Empulse will ride Calaveras, maybe Sierra to Felter to Calveras and back!

Are we having fun yet?
I rode there (9/23/17) from Milpitas side past the sign the road was slippery with fresh chip seal. Haven't been back since.

The problem with not being able to take Calaveras the whole way is that you can't make the Mines/Mt. Hamilton Rd loop without a section of freeway. It used to be that you could to up Mines, out San Antonio Valley up to the observatories, down Mt. Hamilton Road, then a very short section of San Jose streets over to Sierra, then Felton and Calaveras back over to Sunol. The only other roads through a town are those through the south side of Livermore.

With Calaveras closed, you have to go a long ways through Milpitas and Fremont, then take 680 through a section that is always bad on weekday afternoons. It is not nearly as nice of a back roads ride as it was before the closure.

bitchen'! :thumbup

I guess that explains the chip-seal (probably done a few months ago) :p
Since the road is closed to thru traffic, there's been a lack of upkeep (dirty and remnants of chip-seal gravel). Current conditions make for a fun ride on a sumo, moreso than a sprotbile. Also, keep in mind, others still venture the road (cages, moto's, and cyclists). Therefore, don't think for a moment you have the road all to yourself. Have fun, be safe :ride
