Anyone had an older Arai reconditioned?

Here’s some more studies:

The myth of helmets wearing out with age was put out there by helmet companies to sell more helmets. Although they might be risking some liabilities if they were to admit that helmets lasts a really long time. Age may accumulate other damage from dropping and kicking. I get bored after about 5-yrs and get a new one and rotate out current one as backup.

That would all be discussed prior to sending it in. Most everyone's scenarios have crossed my mind.

I don't need this helmet, it's just my old Haga, and I kind of like it. I figured around $200 to do what I need, and that's reasonable to me.

Ehhh....put it on the wall on one of the LAC shelves from Ikea. 15years is a long time and your brains are worth well more. Helmet tech has improved a ton with the advent of MIPS and your helmet EPS may be questionable.

IME, it's never a bad idea to upgrade if you've got the funds.

This is a good point, a 15 year old helmet may be just as good as the day it was built, but its still not as good as a new helmet. The changes are subtle but helmets are improving still.

I always suspected this and still have a 25 yo Doohan Arai that I wear once or twice a year. I did throw out a 35 yo Shoei because its adhesives dried out and foam parts disintegrated to dust. My point is, there are other helmet bits that will degrade over time.

I like to think I take care of my current Arai that is 4 yo. Surprisingly the fabric covers over the foam are tearing at the seams. Replacement parts are not cheap :(

I have had the same problem with Arai, things coming apart, chin strap fuzzing up, etc...switched to Shoei and much less problems.

I stopped buying Arais for the same reason. After 3-5 years the vents are all floppy, side pods cracked and trim falling off.

My Arai is a Corsair X and I expect better durability given the expense. I do enjoy the lightweight, comfort fit and finish. Shield and paint still look excellent, vents work smoothly and visor mechanism is still excellent. But shame they continue to make vent covers out of eggshells (admittedly dropped onto garage floor from 2') and the fabric looks worn. I may just bite the bullet and place the worn parts but so pricey.
