Anyone coming up from So Cal to Nor Cal?

I found a really good buy in San Diego and was wondering if anyone is coming up North (maybe to Laguna or SF) this or next weekend? I'll pay for gas and your meals :)

Also looked into Uship and other companies. They seem to want a lot for their services.

Riding it back up is out of the question. Bike has under 200 miles and still under break in period. Don't want to mess that process up.

Any thoughts?

Whats uship charging you?

Uship is asking around mid $400. Never used them before. Not sure of their process and how I can guarantee the moto will not be damaged. Quick search online was not positive. If anybody have any personal experiences?

I will be coming back up from Cypress on Tuesday. What kind of bike are we talking about? If it'll fit on a hitch carrier (under 500-ish pounds), I can probably help, but I don't have any more room inside the van.

You'd have to get the bike to Cypress, though—I won't have time to go any further south.

Remember to ride safe.
I was in the same situation lol, I ended up buying a truck and drove down to LA to pick it up lol

Surj is probably your best option if he has room and it's convenient for him.

The process is you put what you need shipped, door to door. You stipulate your needs (open trailer, closed trailer, pallet, van, insurance, etc etc.) and then you pay them and they deliver.

You cannot guarantee that anything won't be damaged. But that's why you stipulate insurance policy. Pictures before, pictures after. Don't sign if something is there that wasn't. Unfortunately since you'll only have seen it on the delivery side, it might be hard if something does happen. $400 is reasonable since it saves you a 14-16 hour round trip, gas, and wear and tear on your vehicle or renting one.

I've used U-Ship twice for two different m/c's, 2 different x-country trips and recommend them highly. No problems, no issues, no complaints. Excellent service as they kept me posted throughout the booking process and while on the road.

Second only to Surg @ CityBike! :--)

Thanks Surj. PMed ya. Will work with the seller to see if he can arrange something in Cypress.

I'll call this my plan B

Thank you for the break down. Never used UShip before. The seller was gonna pick it up and store it for about a week before delivering to me. I thought that was kinda of fishy but I guess it's standard practice.

Also found this company - http://www.motoshippers.com/. Quote seems reasonable. Will respond back to this thread with my results.

mid $400 is reasonable. Just gas alone from SF to SD and back with a 500lb bike may cost $175 on a full size truck.

Also, asking strangers on the internet to haul a bike for you with guarantee of no damage is not really reasonable IMO.

if this bike is new and cost a bit of coin, I would hire a professional or DIY IMO.

I had a vespa shipped from michigan to sf. cost me about 375. mind you
my pops put it on a pallet for me to save some cost.
i used USHIP. when the bike came it was not standing upright anymore.
it also took around 3 weeks. You get what you pay for. I say go and pick it up yourself or pay a professional motorcycle hauler

Bought my 2015 Interceptor from Huntington Beach Honda 4 weeks ago with 0 miles. Rode it back 430 miles over the course of 2 days, not a bad ride after getting out of LA traffic. Went up I5 and crossed over Rt46 with a stop at Jack Ranch Cafe and the James Dean Memorial to Paso Robles, stopped there for the night then on to the Bay Area and RWC.

I do not know what kind of bike it is but I spoke to Ryan at East Bay Motorsports and the guys at Honda Huntington Beach about riding it back. Both told me exactly the same thing, the break in will not be a problem. Keep your right hand under control and it is fine. Give a little what's for every once in a while but not sustained high RPM. The VFR ran about 75mph at 5500 RPM in 6th. It was a little less exciting than I would have liked but I clocked 430 miles of the 600 before the break in service pretty quickly. Taking it in tomorrow am for the service.

Clearly you have to do what you are comfortable with but for me it was sort of fun to ride it back. I bought my 97 VFR used (7,000 miles) in Phoenix back in 2005. I rode it back too, over the grapevine in Feb through 8 inches of snow, 30F temps and icy roads. Stopped at the gas station at the top of the hill to put my gloves in the microwave because I couldn't feel my hands. Not sure I would do that one again but it makes for a cool story...

Taken the morning I left.

I ride my Harley back and forth from LA to Oakland at least every few weeks. It's not a bad ride, you can lane split and cut time. I recommend getting a ride down and riding the bike back up. OR option 2, borrow some ramps from someone, and rent a truck from Enterprise which has unlimited mileage. Drive down, pick up the bike, play at the beach, have some ice cream and drive home with the bike on the back for the truck. 1 day rental(about $60), about $110 worth of gas, and your good.

It's going to be very difficult to finish the break-in if you're completely unwilling to ride the bike :teeth

Unless you're buying a collector's item, you should just fly down and ride the bike back. Vary throttle use by rowing through the gears when you're stuck on the highway so you don't spend the entire trip at one RPM, then have the 600-mile service done as soon as you're back. Problem solved!

If you sit on uship for a bit you can get a cheaper qoute. If someone is legit on there look up they're Dot number and call em up directly. Just make sure they do a condition report and bill of lading. I hauled motorcycles for awhile. It's really stressful. You're dealing with 6-8 bikes usually with 2 people per bike to communicate with. Plus all the stops and dead miles going from spot to spot. There's a reason why I stopped doing it.

I've shipped my Multistrada from San Jose to San Diego (where I'm currently at) and I used http://www.motoshippers.com/ - I paid less than $400 but YMMV, that was in 2016. Bike was picked up from my friend's house, shipped in an enclosed trailer and dropped off at my house in SD with no issues.

:rofl Hatchbacks are awesome! Reminds me of the time I hauled my C70 from SF to Berkeley in the back of my VW. I must have spilt gas everywhere.
