it's out in Montana/Wyoming. Wondering when is the better time to do it without getting snowed in somewhere in the rockies. Not sure if I'm going there this year or not but want to

I've driven it several times in my car in July/August. It gets pretty chilly up there, but I never ran into any snow storms during the summer. Technically it can happen, but you'll have better luck avoiding snow during the end of July.

I rode a V-rod from Cody to Red Barn & back, I would have been so screwed if the gas stop up on top about half way wasn't there. I was there in July, no snow. That Minimart has to be seasonal. Sept/Oct will be pushing it as to snow, but I doubt that it will trap you for the winter.

I've driven the Beartooth, and it's one of the most beautiful, impressive roads I've ever had the pleasure to drive or ride. Especially coming from Red Barn, the elevation and climatic zone change is very dramatic.

Lots of gorgeous territory and riding there. :thumbup

Mid-summer's your best shot.

I rode it in early September and it was perfect. And as other people have said, it's one of the most beautiful rides I have ever ridden.

Just got back. If you have time, do beartooth/chief Joseph both CW and CCW. Stay in Red Lodge or Columbus if $$$ is short. Cody is a shithole...like central Nevada without the nice weather and geographic character.

We did it, second week of this july.
sure enough, it rained. Even hailed on the outside of Yellowstone. Guess I'll have to do it again someday.
Montana and Idaho rocked. Route 12 from Missoula down to Lewiston,ID was much better

Good rhythm but crawling with local constabulary when I was there. 3/129 from Enterprise to Clarkston was tasty, as was spiral highway.
