i dont think there is lot of dirt. You can signup on DocWong's meetup group or signup to his mailing list. Am not a big lover of long Hwy rides [prefer more mountain roads], but this will be my first group long overnight ride.

Quote from his original email invite.

Hi,

After many years of track riding, I long for the days of touring the
incredibly beautiful roads and scenery of Northern California.

So I'm planning a wonderful overnight, weekend ride and you're
invited, but let me know soon as I'm working out the details and
reservations.

What: Doc Wong Lost Coast Ride (most incredible roads in California/
world!)
When: We leave Sept 18th, Friday night 7:30 PM from Redwood City or
along the way if you live up north and return Sunday evening, Sept 20th.
Where: See below for the route, we'll be going thru the Trinity
Mountains, then Lassen Mountains and then back to the Bay Area.
Cost: Whatever it costs for your gas, bike and motel reservations.
Skill Level: As long as you feel you can safely negotiate the route,
you're invited.
Riding Buddies: We'll most likely separate into 3 or so groups, but
still I'd prefer if you ride with a buddy. No problem if you don't
have one, we'll pair you up.
Passengers are welcome.
Type of bikes: any. I'll be on my BMW 1200 GS dual sport bike, but
there will be cruisers and sportbikes there too.

HOW TO SIGN UP:

1. Call and make your hotel reservations by Sept 6th: (Let them know
you're with the Doc Wong Group)

Friday night Sept 18th: Super 8 Motel. 707-468-8181 $68.88 single
bed, $78.88 2 beds 693 South Orchard Avenue, Ukiah.

Saturday night Sept 19th: 49er Gold Country Inn: (530) 623-4937
Weaverville.

2. E-mail me that you've done it. That way I can count you as paid for.

Here's the route: (There will be optional shortcuts, dual sport
trails and bailout routes)

Friday night Sept 18th: http://tinyurl.com/lvgptp

Saturday Sept 19th: http://tinyurl.com/n87fxu

Sunday, Sept 20th: http://tinyurl.com/ncux99

Wow...those are going to be some long pavement days! If you're not used to long miles in the twisties, you're in for a very fun workout!

I've done a ton of riding in the Lost Coast area, and there are some extremely fun roads, both paved and dirt, that are bypassed on the routes shown. Hopefully that's what he's talking about then he says there are some more dual-sporty options and detours :thumbup

Have fun and be sure to post up a report!

I really wanna do this, but my biggest problem is monkey butt. The DRZ is no picnic after 30 mins. Any DIY solutions? Don't really want to spend a ton after already spendin on luggage, a rack, and a fuel can.

Please don't say lambskin!

What concentration of the ride will be twisty roads?

If a good deal of it is (like a regular Wong Clinic) then myself and my dad might join in.

I just need to get my oil changed and then Ill be good to go, after this ride (and everything else over the next few weeks) Ill probably be due for some new tires and my 10,000 mile service!

Better start saving up some cash!

Not much. (again defn of twisties from local routes - Jamison Creek and Kings Mountain type slow/tight twisty ? OR 84 type smooth/fast twisty).

Am joining, since this will be my first group long ride, i have done several solo overnight rides and 500+ mile single day ride, guess this will be fun and Doc has his immense experience to blabber :teeth

Join the ride, and if Doc thinks all of us want more twisties, pretty sure he can change the routes :thumbup

Well, the cheap easy answers are "Anti-Monkey Butt Powder" and maybe some Wicker's underwear. But those matter more at the 1-2 day mark than the 30 minute mark.

We were'nt able to join Doc Wong's ride, but we were able to do a ride of our own up the 1 to Fort Bragg and explore some of the dirt roads around the Lost Coast like Usal rd. I thought padded bike shorts would do, but after 2 days and 886 miles I think Ill spend some extra cash on that sheep skin cover. I initially didn't want to spend the money, but now I see its worth it.
