Any (4-wheel) Overland types in here?

My biggest gripe about them was on-road ride and comfort. Loud, vibrating.

I didn’t find them to be too bad on noise but wet pavement is a little spooky. Duratrac got crazy loud but they were awesome in snow. To my surprise the Cooper STT Pros were great in almost everything but they got loud at the end of their life. So far my favorite tire has been Cooper ST MAXX. A hybrid AT/MT tire and they come in 255/85/16 (skinny 33”) I absolutely love them on my taco.

Yeah, they weren't great in the rain coming over 17, got a bit skittish a few times which was a bit puckering. Tahoe though? Fan-fucking-tastic in unplowed roads with 12"+ of fresh snow on the ground. Felt better than coming over 17 in the rain even. Chain control waved me right on through with the Jeeps but made the X5 behind me put chains on.

I’m almost regretting going with the KO2s now only when I think I put so few miles on the Tahoe I could have gotten MTs. Only 2k miles in the last year. I don’t do any serious wheeling I just don’t want to get stuck whenever I am off pavement. And MTs look badass and cmon that’s at least half of it.

Oh you won’t get stuck with KO2s, or at least not by any fault of the tires :laughing

Yea, agreed. CABilly you made a good choice, they are good tires. Every tire is a compromise and if the Tahoe is your fun vehicle you’re good.

Yeah, I'm only really griping because I put them on a daily driver. I'll probably get them again once I get the Bronco (or whatever their newer version is by then). By that point it won't be my daily it'll be my secondary fun trip vehicle.

Not sure how many of you heard, but there was a big crash on Black Bear pass recently. I can't recall all of the specifics, but apparently, a driver got out of his Jeep while on the pass. It's said he set the park brake, but the Jeep rolled away anyway. His girlfriend and two dogs were in the Jeep at the time. She was ejected and is currently in serious condition. One dog was missing for awhile, but it seems both were found and OK.

I just saw this video shot from an unrelated Jeeper that caught some footage of the incident. Fortunately, this footage does not include the ejections.

I'm posting it as a reminder to always "do all the steps" when leaving a vehicle. In the Post Office, they constantly hammer on the employees on the steps to prevent rollaways/runaways. They do happen, and the consequences can be severe.

We've been trying to get to their meetup for 2 months now - this month we're out of town until Tuesday. Hopefully next month we'll make it! We did the Jeep Adventure Academy at Hollister Hills on Oct 16 and had a great time!

Good in dirt and rocks, they are a tough tire. Crap in mud. My experience they don’t shed mud quickly, they are not the KM2 or KM3.

BFG KO2 update:

Well this post held up well. I had one of the most stressful 40 minute drive this morning as I drove 3.5 miles on a canal levee road after a rain. The mud was not deep but it was slick as fuck. I had to stay in 4L with the wheel locked all the way to the right and I still spent most of the time driving down the road at a 45 degree angle. If the tires has caught traction we would have gone straight into the canal.

We got through it without getting stuck but I’m pretty disappointed in that performance.

Been off the board for a while. We have now completed 18,000 miles in our 4x4 camper van and have done several week long trips this year. We are now mostly boondocking and have the van in its 3rd iteration, optimized for this - I think we are about there.

I put a set of BFG KO2's on it from new and for where we roam - they are amazing - sand, snow, mud, flint rocks - sometimes all at the same time. We are getting more and more confident off-road and are continually amazed where this thing can take us.

We are just back from a week in the Eastern Sierras and Bodie Hills, here are a few pic's. We spent 2 nights in the Bodie Hills at 9500ft overlooking Mono Lake in the distance.

So far we have been focused on the Western Sates. As far North as Southern Oregon, As far South as San Diego and as far East as the NV/UT border. I was planning a 4-6 week trip to Baja, windsurfing with buddies but that's off until Covid-19 is over. So plan on visiting Death Valley again and then Arizona.
