Anyone down for some social distancing camping this weekend? :dunno

Anyway, I'll be likely going somewhere just haven't decided where yet. Need to pick up a new back from the stores since they've reopened and all.

I was looking at going back to Prewitt Ridge this weekend but looks like the Monterey Area of Los Padres National Forest is still closed due to COVID-19.

Yeah I'm kind of desperately searching for anywhere I can park and camp that's relatively nearby and I keep coming up empty. Seems like most things are not reopening until at least the 29th. :dunno

I gave up on nearby a few years ago. I find myself camping in the Mojave at least 4 times a year now. New years at Dove Springs, and then a few trips to a lakebed near Ft Irwin.

I also bring a camper, my Land Rover, a dirt bike, 100 gallons of fuel, and 20lbs of meat to BBQ.

I just spent the night up on Hwy 4. The pass is open.

I was going to go to a spot a bit west of Bear Valley, but they have that road blocked off. They also have the Corral Hollow trail blocked off, as well as the east entrance to Slick Rock trail.

On a good note... the MVUM for the area shows a number of little stumpy trails off of the Hwy. I spent today checking them all out, and only a couple are impassible. Mosquito lake campground is still closed, but you could find a spot to park. Although it's basically snow bound. hermit Valley is also not open, but it's clear of snow and accessible.

I'm missing an MVUM for farther east on Hwy 4, so I also checked out a couple trails shown on my topo maps for that. Forest road 112 was a fun challenge, but washed out on the east end where it crosses the creek. Very tight with lots of pinstripes and a tricky bypass around a fallen tree. 112A had the same washout problem, with a tough turn around.

Right now, I'm in Tahoe. I'll try to go to Richardson Lake tonight. I haven't decided if I'll go to Loon Lake tomorrow.

If you're still reading this. I saw a post on NorCal 4x4 Rescue a couple of weeks ago that said the USFS was closing down Loon Lake, both established and dispersed campgrounds until 2022. Ice House Rd. is open, just can't camp there, dunno if you were planning on that.

Edit: Dug up that post and this was the posted link: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FS...Z2kBSF44IOF5cQ-qc93iQlUQQZobxmP1l8qzC1fNFts4Y

Sweet! Thanks!

Was really, really nice to get out in the forest. No dust, 60 degrees and things are still blooming. Didn't pass one vehicle.

Yeah, all the areas leading up to the actual trail entrance are closed for the duration. But areas along the trail are still open. Basically, once you go past the kiosk, you’re good.

A far as Richardson lake goes... there’s a pretty nasty mud hole only a couple hundred yards into the trail. That was the second spot I had to winch, so I stopped well short of the lake.
