Sitting here staring at the late season snow and planning my September already. Since we moved to Colorado, my annual trip on the SV is the route to Hawthorne. Since I'm a planner by profession, I must plan. Of course things can always change, but I'm a huge fan of knowing all my options along the way. I used a new application to plot out the 2019 route. Have to say I'm not entirely sold on it, but will see what happens when I upload to my phone for nav. I still prefer my old paper maps.
Here are my current thoughts. Trying to hit a lot of old favorites from previous trips and running about 2,500 miles total. If there are any oddball, interesting things along the way, let me know. I'm all about the world's largest ball of twine. :thumbup
Outbound to Hawthorne
Day 1 Tuesday:
Drop southwest out of Denver and hit Mesa Verde
Day 2 Wednesday:
Stop by Shiprock in NM and check out assorted other rocks and mesas along the way.
Visit Canyon De Chelly
Ride through the Navajo Nation from Chinle up to Lake Powell ending in Kanab, Utah
Day 3 Thursday:
Cruise through the southern end of Zion.
Head down past St. George through the corner of northern Arizona and into Nevada
Pit stop for rhubarb pie at the Little A’le’inn along 395 (Extraterrestrial Hwy)
Spend the night at the Clown Motel in Tonopah – only taken 11 years
Day 4 Friday:
Cross Nevada and take the whoop-de-whoops of 120 past Mono Lake
Enter Yosemite and head to Tuolumne Meadows
**Hopefully find some BARFers on their way to Hawthorne**
Head back east to the Mobil station at Lee Vining for lunch
167/359 to Hawthorne by 3pm. At the pool drinking by 4 :staRang:staRang.
Heading Home
Day 1 Sunday (Hungover short day):
Back through Tonopah
Pie at the Little A’le’inn again because it’s a tradition
West to Cedar City for the night and visit with the nice hotel owners there.
(their little boy loves my bike and dinosaurs :teeth)
Day 2 Monday:
Ride the canyon of Hwy 14, 89 up to Hatch and hit my favorite Hwy 12
Ride into Bryce for a bit
Take 12 all the way up to Torrey – hooning all the way
Pick apples in Fruita , through Hanksville, and up 24 to Hwy70
Day 3 Tuesday:
Cruise 70 home to Denver
Maybe stop at Glenwood Springs to soak my sore ass for a while.
