America's Cup 2021

YouTube oddly predicted that I would like America's Cup videos and presented a few to me today. I was like "huh?" since I don't think I've ever watched a sailing video. But I am in awe of these new Cup boats.

Spec'd by current Cup holder New Zealand, they are 75ft long monohulls with retractable hydrofoil thingies on each side and a deep rudder with a hydrofoil on the end. Top speed is expect to be over 50 knots or 60mph :wow.

Well produced video of the British boat on the water:

That's really cool stuff. I know nothing of sailing but, those things seam really fast. Sail boats have the right of way on the water right? Don't get in their fkn way. Jeez. I was wondering what those wings on the side were for. Like sand rail steering brakes.

Except for the music in the first video :twofinger, those videos were fun and interesting.

Thanks for posting it.:thumbup

I used to sail. Watched the Aussie 18s when they came to SF. The technology of sailboats has come quantum leaps forward in recent years. Awesome

So easy to fall off the foils in fluky wind, this will make raceable wind (high minimum wind speed) hard to produce for tv viewers.

Equipment failures, brain farts, will see some spectacular results.

Ragged edge racing, , ,

I remember being more bummed about Dennis Conner losing the Cup than the KAL shoot down by the Soviets.

those were the days ...

the AC racing sailboats that ultimately lead us to AC75s ... :x

gee, remember the seemingly endless lawsuits back then ...?

PATRIOT goes 2-0 on opening day of ACWS Auckland
by NYYC American Magic. Dec 17, 2020
New York Yacht Club American Magic’s AC75 PATRIOT, the U.S. Challenger for the 36th America's Cup, won both of its races on the opening day of the Prada America's Cup World Series Auckland.

The four races held today were the first official contests for the AC75 class yachts.

Thursday also marked the return of a New York Yacht Club-affiliated yacht to an America's Cup racecourse after a 18-year absence.

Beautiful boats. Look fast.

How does this series work? So is the entirety of the "America Cup" going to done there in Auckland, do they go to other places? Is it a single series of events, or a campaign over several venues?

I had visions of sailors crawling around, yanking on ropes, cranking sails up and down and whatever. These guys seem fairly stuck in their areas. Is it all being done with motors and what not today? Mind, I don't know anything about the mechanics of sailing.

think all the match racing (between two boats) takes place in Auckland, the America's Cup World Series between 17 - 20 Dec 2020 followed by the PRADA Cup from 15 Jan - 22 Feb 2021 and the 36th America's Cup Match from 6-21 March.

think you can say it’s a series of races, all held in Auckland, on Waitemata Harbour, over the next couple months, to see who gets to go up against the “defender”, Emirates Team New Zealand, for the Auld Mug in March.

reading the AC75s are a new design, and so all the teams are still learning to handle the boats. I wasn’t sure about them, but have to say they’re growing on me ... think the foils are lifted by hydrolic power, and the stuck guys are working hand power winches to control the sails ... :dunno

five min NBC coverage from yesterday:

be super exciting if the New York Yatch Club makes its way through to be able to race in March ... :party

Yeah, you can see the guys cranking the coffee grinders to trim the sails. I assume the foils are powered.
It's exhausting work on the upper body.

Commentators last night said that all above hull power is the grinders.
All the below hull power is batteries.

Another said that each front foil leg is ~1.4 ton.
A lot of weight to swing around ... frequently.
