Aftermarket Cans

I have a Two Brothers slip-on on my 2013 F800GS. It sounds really sweet compared to my old stock exhaust. I just brought the bike to BMW SF for its 6,000 mile service and they told me that (1) they would not be able to take my bike on trade without charging me to switch back to a stock exhaust and (2) that you can be pulled over and fined for not having an exhaust that meets CA emissions standards.

I am curious - how likely is that to happen?? Am I really at risk of getting a fine for my slip-on can?? :afm199

question one. it is illegal

question two unless you are rev bombing an irate police officer I doubt you'll get harassed.
There are those in certain places who love to pull over bikes but in my experience I have never been pulled over.

There are threads about this so google next time.

As far as the Break my wheels dealer is concerned why would you even trip on their remarks that could be years from now.

LEOs don't drive around with decibel meters so you're unlikely to get pulled over for the can unless you're trying to draw attention to yourself. If you get pulled over for something else, however, there's a good chance you'd get cited for the illegal exhaust can in addition to whatever else you where doing.

Of course, there was also the rumor last year that the cops rolled through STP citing anyone who had an illegal exhaust. I believe that turned out to be bogus, but if I was a PD that needed to make some extra cash raiding a well-known motorcycle hangout might seem pretty attractive...

I believe that it has to be a city ordinance, otherwise the money for a violation goes to the state.

Speeding ticket money goes to the state, since it's a state ordinance. Some cities tried getting around that by having local ordinances that they cited, but the state slapped that down.

Yes....illegal.

Get pulled over.....low risk.

Don't know about your particular bike, but most riders consider Two Brothers cans to be stupid loud and dump them after not too long. Your results may vary.

IMO, the fact that u arent riding a typical supersport reduces your changes of getting cited for aftermarket exhaust.

I changed my f700gs to a BMW supplied street-legal akrapovic, I kept the original for when I sell it.

Dealers by law cannot sell a bike without a street-legal exhaust. Many of them ignore this rule, Harley in particular has been coming under fire for this lately.

yeah so like, the story goes that a few of the bike shops here in SF got smacked hard for selling bikes with illegal exhausts, so now you get this.

Always keep the original exhaust.

Which reminds me, I sold my tiger exhaust. Crap ...

Yep. Stupid loud, and cheap. You've got a BMW, get something nice (Akro makes a fully legal slipon) or keep it stock.

Also, although you're unlikely to be pulled over for an exhaust violation, if you get pulled over for something else, they might cite you for the exhaust while they've got you there.

I've got a BMW and I went cheap: Pipe Werx Street Legal series slip-on. Since the cat is still in place, no emissions violation, and with the baffle in, not too loud. The Street Legal designation is a UK, not a US thing though, and it might not be legal on 2013+ bikes here in CA?

Weighs much less than stock, sounds better and simplifies wheel removal. Works for me.

i think the law changed in 2013 -you might be exempt.

EPA sticker law requires street motorcycles registered in CA and built on or after Jan. 1, 2013, to have an EPA sticker.

I've never been clear on how this affects pre-2013 bikes. Assumed it was based on DB output, have also heard any tampering with stock exhaust could be cited.

For me. Unwant d attention. I had two brothers on one of my FJRs ....stupid loud and had a CHP / Sherriff block the road as I ride at a healthy clip. When he saw me two up coming around corner two up he ignored me....but I was hauling ass. My opinion....get something else as does not warrant attention.
