AFM, whats your annual spending?

Just for funsies my budget in the late 80's was 10-15K a year.

That of course did not include the bike, any crash damage or leathers.
Just the coming, racing and going.

But we had over 20 races! :port
And the sprint races were 11 laps on the longer Sears track.
Can't remember if Willow Springs was the same, but I believe they were.

DO you get dinged for each race? (race fees)

Like for example you run a Clubman heavyweight and an over 40 heavyweight?

or if you run a heavyweight and a middleweight?

stangmx13

not Stan
$1000+ per weekend
$1000+ per crash
$1000+ per private coaching session
$1000+ per bike upgrade

see a theme here :D

:twofinger how I live my life

Seriously, I have to check myself frequently when my wife wants to spend money! lol....$300 for what:wtf is what im thinking, then i remember the money I spent on motorcycle stuff and I dont say shit! :teeth

But she is getting smart. I set up the 4 days at CSS and she went and planned herself a hotel stay about 30 miles away and an itinerary through the city for 4 days.....:rofl...

with what we (XS Racing - Nick and Myself) have spent for the 16', 17', and 18' seasons, it blows my mind. We haven't had a "Budget" the last three years. Its more of a spend as you go mindset. Our pit setup was $20k alone. I could have put 20% down on a million dollar home if i didn't race the last three years :rofl

And we aren't even good! :laughing

I raced from 1986 to 2007. It makes me laugh to remember that I rode my Ninja 600 to the track for my first race, number plates and tools in my back pack (no joke) That was a time when there were NO track days and 65 bikes on a 600 Production class grid. My first goal was to know I was doing well enough to know the announcer had a reason to call my name on the PA system :). Moving quickly to the big bore classes was my second goal. Fortunately enough sponsors were attained that the racing was relatively inexpensive for much of the last ten years.

Like (the very quick) Mr Bawden eluded to - competing at the pointy end of the big bore stuff can be very expensive.

Racing competitively was like a little business venture, there was definitely a work side to it. Which is different from when we all start with dreams in our eyes -all about the thrill of it.

Would never trade my time in racing, the places it took me, the friendships that were forged stand the test of time.

There is contingency money to be made if you place well in certain races... for example bmw pays a few grand per race for winning formula pacific...

I was talking with a MotoAmerica racer and he made 40k last year just in contingency winnings... he has a full time job as well... not a bad haul if I do say so...

The lap time cut offs were removed previously, but that referential language stayed in the rule book. It will be removed in 2019 (it was brought up at a meeting, according to the meeting minutes). I had that exact same question earlier last year.

One way to compare your lap times is to just look at the race results on Speedhive for your class, and see what the general lap times are.

I wonder how much not needing to have specific lap times plays an effect on new racers not having enough experience....

I wonder what they spent for those 40k winnings. I bet they're still in the red like the rest of us...

I agree... The plan involved a business line of credit, interest only payments, annual back-to-stock conversions and sales of the race bikes, etc. Racing both liter bike and 600 bikes in a few different clubs back east.

One crash or failing to win and the whole house of cards comes down pretty quickly... if he’s not in the red for last year I bet he has a chunk of debt from another year, and if not, then it’s only a matter of time... although I wish him continued luck and good fortune :)

I’m happy with my current setup... less than $2000 for my ‘92 f250 7.3l diesel, same with my enclosed trailer... a reasonable person would have kept their $1000 sv650 and raced the first few seasons on that... instead I’m trailering my financed race bike worth five times the cost of the rig...:rofl at the end of this season it will be paid off... :rofl guess I’m crazy like the other guy :laughing:ride

That probably gets a bit tricky needing full coverage insurance on a financed purchase.

I dont know if that can be answered in open forum but im curious if there is a race insurance that covers crashes or if the bike just gets called in as a wreck from home cause you wrecked on some obscure road that nobody seen and you had no cell phone to call it it in.....Still have race fairings and tires to explain to insurance adjuster(or what ever they are called)...

I have a dui from 2015 (my wake up call, haven’t had any alcohol since) and can’t even get full coverage... the lender tacked on collateral protection insurance to the balance of the note... doesn’t protect or insure me, just ensures their ass is covered if I wad it up...

Insurance fraud is something I stay away from... actually fraud in any sense... my profession and morals require me to have integrity and I sleep well at night :)

That’s not to say that the highway close to the racetrack doesn’t have a disproportionate amount of totaled vehicles, or so I’ve heard :wow

Good deal! I celebrated 10 years clean last sept....Good morals keeps the mind clean and integrity will pay off in karma I do believe that and practice same principles...:thumbup

I was not aware of such insurance from dealer. Must be different for bikes as with vehicles I cant even non-op if its financed....
