AFM rule 6.1.3(a)

I'm trying to figure out a way to break into racing that's cheaper and more forgiving of errors than an 848 or 1098, and I was wondering about this...

PRODUCTION: Production rules apply (reference section 9.1 & 9.2). Each of the following displacement categories is a class:
xxx-xxx
xxx-xxx
600-650cc (Twins under section 9.2, plus 399-450cc import/domestic 4-cylinders).
601-750cc
xxx-xxx

a)The following four-strokes may run down one class in Production as long as the bike meets all other Production requirements: Singles, Twins, 675cc Triples.

So if I'm reading that right, the Ducati Monster 696 is legal for 650 Production? Or is the intent of the 600-650 class to be twins only within that range of displacements?
Thoughts? Opinions? Alternate interpretations?

Right, you're reading the rule wrong. When it says 'run down a class', an example would be a 400cc single is legal for 250 Production. But a 400cc twin would be illegal for 250 Production. The engine config is factored into the equation, if you have the same engine config yet bust the displacement limit, it's a no-go.

So a 696 twin would be illegal for 650 Production. You could race your 696 in Open Twins though. But honestly, you would hate racing a Monster 696 in Open Twins, if you want to race you should get something more race-friendly. Race-prepped 650 Twins are easy to find for not much money.

If you really want to run a Duc in 650 Twins you could run a Monster 620.

You don't want to be racing an air-cooled 620 against water-cooled 650's. It's silly and frustrating to spend all the money required to go racing only to give yourself such a huge equipment disadvantage. Trust me.

Racing is best explained as when you, the rider, wants to see how you stack up against your competition on relatively equal equipment. When you cloud the issue with some kind of strange bike loyalty/motorcycle fan club weirdness, it all goes to hell. :laughing

TCK!

BARF is not M4M

haha I didn't say it would be a smart thing! Like I said, if you REALLY want to ride a DUC.

...you'll get an ST2 for the street, and pickup a fully prepped Twin Works-massaged SV650 for racing. :laughing

actually you could race a 696 monster in 650 twins or f4. you'll lose but could park under our modesto ducati tent and drink dave's otter pops to ease your pain

in 650 twins you can run up to an 800 supersport now.
which doesn't mean much unless you are fast like ol don babb and have thrown more than a few thousand dollars at it.

much easier to get closer to the podium on an sv. But then you wouldn't be as cool.

I have plenty of ideas for competitive bikes for quite a few classes... most of the ideas are bad! And expensive. I'm just exploring options for possible future bikes to build. Note to self: 650P is out.

No way I'd even attempt a 696 in Open Twins. My buddy Don used to race his 800ss in OT, until he finally realized the futility of it all. That, plus he got a deal on wrecked 1098. Still plenty of time to explore the rulebook and the limits of my bank account.

Are you a Ducati fanboi, or an aspiring racer? You need to draw a line in the sand right about now. Forget your emotions, forget your favorite bike. Buy the best tool for the job at hand, and enjoy. :thumbup

:rofl You woudnt believe how big of a dilema this was for me. Ive been riding for most of my life and just now bought my first Suzuki ever. It was tough, took alot of soul searching.

Sure the Kawi 650 is technically eligible, but it's all about the SV650 in all three classes
I'm not sure if you've noticed but the Kawi is competitive. There's debate about whether it finished 1st or 2nd in the 4 hour, and if I was a full second a lap faster I'd be in the top 10, and that's all me not the bike. :ride

I wasn't talking about it being competitive, I meant participation....99% of the bikes are SV650's. Meaning, it's quite easy to find a prepped SV racebike for sale, they are everywhere.
