AFM Round 6 at Infineon Raceway

Fans at Infineon Raceway were treated to one of the most exciting Formula Pacific races in recent history last weekend, with Pacific Track Time's Michael Earnest, former AFM number one David Stanton, and WSMC legend Jeremy Toye going head to head in a race-long, three-rider battle for the win. As the green flag dropped at the start of the race, it was Formula Pacific points leader and current WSMC number one Jeff Tigert who took the holeshot, with Earnest on his rear wheel. Tigert's lead on his CM Motorsports tuned Honda was short lived, as Earnest took over the lead at the end of the first lap on his EDR Performance tuned Suzuki with a strong move on the brakes in Turn 11. One lap later, both Toye and Stanton slipped past Tigert in the same turn, setting the stage for the rest of the race.

From that point on, Earnest, Toye, and Stanton put a small gap on Tigert, keeping the crowd on their feet as they exchanged positions in Turns 9 and 11 almost every lap. In the final turns of the last lap, Stanton was able to stay just out of striking distance of Toye, taking the win on his Mach 1 Motorsports Yamaha. Second went to Toye with third to Earnest, with 0.641 seconds separating the top three riders at the line.

"What a great race," Earnest stated during the podium ceremony. "I have to congratulate Dave - I wouldn't want anyone else to be up there today. And Jeremy Toye - it's amazing to be up there with him! I'd like to thank all my staff and riders of Pacific Track Time, you guys are really supportive. Terry and Dunlop, EDR Performance and Eric Doran, I feel like I have one of the fastest bikes out here!"

Coming from the fourth row of the grid, Toye wasted no time in charging to the front of the field to challenge for the lead, riding a Lee’s Cycle BMW S1000RR.

"I anticipated that I'd come out and have a good time, and we did just that - that was a BLAST to race!" said Toye. "I love this track, and there are so many fast guys here, that was a good time! My guys at Lee's Cycle just busted their butts this weekend, they got me a bike that got around here pretty good! Also San Diego BMW, and RoadRacing World - this was a REALLY fun race, I haven't had that much fun in a while!"

Stanton's win showed that he still had both the drive and the speed that won him several AFM championships over the years, despite a slow start to the season.

"That was amazing," said Stanton, who also won Open Superbike, Open Grand Prix, and Formula 40 Heavyweight. "Honestly, riding with Jeff, Jeremy, and Michael the level goes so much higher, and my level of comfort riding around these guys - it makes life lot easier out there when you trust the guys you're leaning on. It was a hard race, I had to put a move on Chris (Siglin) at the start, I just put my head down and rode as hard as I could. The Dunlop tires helped me that much more getting to the front, they were consistent the whole time. Jeff Leggitt, for continuing to support me when I was nowhere near the front, Kenny Norman, Kyle, and Lisa, thank you for all your hard work - we really, really appreciate it!"

"It was just such a battle, I knew Jeremy was right on me. I kept seeing +0, and that last lap took about a year to complete! It was a great time - I was really just hoping to be on the podium today, and to win it is just fantastic!"

Round 6 was also a round of the California State Championship series, luring riders like Toye from WSMC and WERA competition from both ends of the state to compete at the 11-turn road course. Other riders with standout performances on the weekend include Lenny Hale with four wins (600 Production, 750 Production, 750 Superbike, and Formula 1) and Jay Avansino with three wins (Formula 4, 650 Twins, and Formula 40 Lightweight).

What an awsome weekend! I've never had so much fun watching and racing!! That FP race was fantastic.

That FP race was great...

The only bummer was for F4 guys (like me) when went back to the pits early to get ready for their race immediately after...then FORGOT that the podium ceremony buys them enough time to watch THE WHOLE THING!:mad

Great weekend. Too bad an idiot on an sv wrecked one of my 250 riders in the warmup lap. That was the only blemish to the weekend for me.

Yeah, Lenny was docked a lap in 600sb for a jumped start.

And, for the record, it's Eric Dorn who owns EDR. :)

Are those results a cut and paste from Road racing mag? They always say Im riding a gsxr 1000 in Open prod. I dont have a 1000. I ride a 750 in that class.

Yeah, I kind of dropped the ball on that. The results Timing and Scoring gave me after the races showed him as the winner, yet talking to him after the race, he was DQed. I could have added a note or something - I'm *very* hesitant to edit the raw results that Timing and Scoring gives me.

Thanks for pointing out the errors guys, I'll do my best to get that straight for the next one. Shawn asked if I could put together FP writeups to go with results to RRW, and they want event press releases pretty quick - doesn't leave me much time to hunt down the correct info when I'm in doubt!

The results I'm given only show the make of the bike - which often forces me to guess the model. I usually do this with a Google search of "first name + last name + AFM". Yesterday, I didn't even have that much, and had to remember, research, or guess everyone's bikes.

I'll make it a habit to continue posting here after races, since it is a press release and property of the AFM - RRW didn't have it posted when I put this up this morning. Feel free to continue posting corrections and feedback here, or via PM or email - it helps me do my job better! I'll be cranking out a more comprehensive report that covers more than just FP for CityBike, so stay tuned :)

Yep, nice to meet you grinding away up the box this weekend Mike:)

Ah, so you're Rory - good meeting ya! I've heard the announcer's booth regulars mention your name a few times, but I never put a screen name to it.

Sitting in the box is the fun part - when the races end is when the work begins...

Thanks Mike! I can always give you a heads up on bikes in my classes too if you need it.

Thanks Berto. This whole "running up a class" thing makes it a little trickier :)

And what the heck is Nick Hayman riding? Used to be a 999, dunno if it's an "R", an "S", or what. And he now has an 848 as well?

He Mike, I could build you a script pretty quickly that would match up rider numbers from a race results spreadsheet (outputted in tab-delimited text) to another spreadsheet output with rider numbers, names and their bikes that could output the same results.

Seems like it's be easier to add to an existing table of riders and their bikes rather than doing it manually.

PM me if you'd like me to throw something like that together before the next round.

Thanks Berto. Now that I have some time, I can shoot him an email to verify.

PM me if you'd like me to throw something like that together before the next round.

Thanks Brett, I'll shoot you a PM. My problem is gathering the correct data - all I have are bike manufacturers and classes. Used to have displacements, not anymore. A Yamaha in 600 Superbike, that's pretty easy. A Ducati in Open Twins, that could be anything...

what are the points standings for FP going into the final round?

If the website is up to date, looks like Tigert 268, Siglin 248, Stanton 230.

Totally. Cool to catch up with you guys, and with AC - he and I go back to like the mid-late 90s, when he was on an FZR600 and I was on an EX500.

I remember his breakthrough performance, when he was running Top 5 at BW against a bunch of R6s and GSX-R600s - Lance Williams sucked the paint off of that thing on the straights!

I'm getting myself a PB shirt - that was pretty rad :)
