Aerostitch Roadcrafter R-3

Sup all,
Just felt like putting some thoughts down. Might be a boring thread but I just felt like documenting the order process. I've been planning for my move to the Bay Area where I'll be moto commuting to/from SFO. I've lived in a bunch of different places, and most of the time I've been a fair weather rider. This time I want to ride rain or shine, cold or hot. Of course this means it's time for an Aerostitch.

I got to wear a 'stitch a few times back in February, and that pretty much solidified my decision. I've been browsing the site since; I submitted a sizing request with my measurements and received an email from Matt the next day sizing me as a 42R. This seems in line with various other garments I wear, but I'm going to double-check my chest measurement before placing my final order. I've worn a 40L that felt fine, but it was for just a few short rides.

Just a couple of days ago I checked back in to the Aerostitch site and was surprised to see that the classic Roadcrafter has been superceded by a new suit called the R-3. This new suit does not have a liner, all the seams are internally taped, and it uses a new zipper that supposedly makes the whole suit fully waterproof - rather than water-resistant. There are a few other nice new features, such as magnets that hold the collar open when not zipped up to the throat, snaps that can hold the collar rolled down, a chest pocket carabiner, etc. The new suit uses slightly different materials than the classic.

I was concerned about the lack of a liner in cold weather, but after calling Aerostitch a couple of times and sending them an email I got response that put my doubts to rest. With the liner the classic suits can not be seam-sealed fully. The lack of a liner in the R-3 provides slightly more room for layering underneath while still fitting the same as a classic suit without getting sweaty in hot weather, and the armor is adjustable where the classic suit armor is essentially fixed in place by fitting into a pocket. I was told that wearing a heated vest - which I plan on doing whether I ordered a classic or R-3 - there would be no difference in warmth on cold days.

So I've decided to order an R-3, I'll be giving them a call to drop a mad load of dough tomorrow.

I have been told that there are no 'off-the-shelf' models and all orders will be custom made with a projected timeline of 5-6 weeks - however I have read of others ordering the R-3 and getting it in less than 2 weeks.

I plan on ordering grey with hi-viz panels, because it's a good compromise between being seen and not being a total power ranger.

I went full Buzz Lightyear on my old Roadcrafter. I'm looking forward to seeing your review of the R3.

A great investment, I commuted and toured in mine for over a decade. If you are riding year round make sure that the 'stitch fits over the pile jacket and pants you might be wearing. If you decide on a sportbike consider a lower back insert and rotated cuffs. Please update us on the R3's performance/fit.

I got a new Darien jacket at the SF pop up store and love it. One thing I did not know and have not seen advertised, Aerostich will do Custom Colors. An Oakland Motorcycle Club member showed up at the Stockton Motorcycle club ride with a Stich in OMC colors:hail

Last year I was able to get a "sizing" suit. It was an "off the rack" size with whatever color they happened to have.
They don't still do that?

They do still do the sizing suit on request. After speaking to them again and confirming all of my measurements, I'm confident the suit will fit, so I'm not going to request a sizing suit. The cost of shipping back and forth to Puerto Rico is a bit annoying.

I placed the order today, received an email shortly after that the lead time is 5-7 weeks for the production of the suit and they would keep me informed. I received a tracking number for the other items I ordered from them (silk scarf, heated vest, and Kriega pack) within an hour.

So far I'm very happy with their customer service, I have spoken to them on the phone 4 times and sent an electronic sizing request and a couple of emailed questions. Responses have been lightning fast. I've been a bit fussy about my order because it's expensive and custom, and they've been very accomodating.

Super bummed I didn't get to see their pop up store, maybe I could have tried on a suit that fits me better than what I have now. That being said, my 2 piece Roadcrafter is a little worn, but I wouldn't want anything else should I go down or get caught in bad weather again :)

They didn't do a pop-up here this year did they? They seem to be doing a lot of them though. Maybe they'll return.

At the pop-up last year I didn't find a 1-piece RC that fit me--and they didn't offer to measure me. I think the new RC-3 has a roomier fit (less liner), and I'd want to try it for size. Hopefully they'll have a "demo fleet" of them ready if/when they return.

Whatever colors you selected, don't get high vis knees and lower legs. That was one mistake i made when i ordered my suit. The yellow color shows every grease drop or bit of dirt. It's impossible to keep it clean when you put a knee down to lube your chain or whatever.

I asked them if they could switch my knee color to black and they wanted another $120 (60 each) for it plus shipping both ways.

I find my roadcrafter to be chilly at 55f and below. Almost no wind protection from the front. I wear a leather vest underneath which works ok to keep the wind off. Below 40f i put my heated jacket liner on. I find sweaters underneath the suit to be too restricting.

That's a good observation and you raise a good point. I'm not too worried about it actually. I don't mind picking up some grime from normal road use, it can be washed, plus a stitch should be a bit dirty for that authentic look. I would rather keep the visibility that the neon helps provide. I couldn't fully commit to a full hi-viz suit but I also don't want to be less visible grey and black.

Do not expect it to fit when you get it and do NOT go for a ride if it doen't. I filled out the forms, measured very carefully and when it arrived it was massive. I could be 40 lbs heavier and six inches taller and it would still probably be too big. The suit is WAY too big for me but when I chatted them they told me to try and on and see what I thought. I did and took a quick loop around my neighborhood to see if it would work while riding an actual motorcycle, not just sitting on a sofa of looking at myself in the mirror. I then reported back that it was still too big but since I had worn it while riding my bike they basically told me to go fuck myself in terms of a return. The suit quality is great but the customer service sucked. Now I have a suit I waited a long time to get, doesn't fit, and can't be altered according to them. I am considering trying to trade for a smaller size on the intrawebz just because I like the actual product so much but no way will I be dealing directly with them again. Thumbs down for my experience. I know many people who have had great experiences with them, sadly, I was not one of them. Overall a giant disappointment and wish I had bought a BMW or similar off the rack product.
Yes I post this in every Aerostitch thread I see. Yes I am still butthurt over the experience. :laughing

No liner

There is the advantage of being able to wear better under-gear. And the classic roadcrafter liner may be the one weak spot as far as durability goes.
But I am on my 3rd suit, and cannot recall ever having a failure of any kind with the inner liner.
I have a Darien Light jacket that is a great product, maybe similar to the RS3. What I like most about it, is that I can wear a heavy wool sweater under it in the winter, or go with a "cool max" type of shirt in how weather. Very water resistant, too. Just wash with NikWax.
