A Thing BARF Could Do.

Taze away, Yana...
Every time I try to get a read on the value of a bike I search the for sale thread. If I were to guess it's about 8/10 the OP has removed the sale (or sold for) price changing this to "SOLD" I understand that the OP wants to know the bike is sold, but that doesn't help anyone trying to get an idea of market value.

Is this a thing that can change? Everyone seems to think the classifieds on barf are the bees knees, but in this area it's really lacking well, for me anyway.

Am I the only one that cares? Even on eBay you can go back and see what things sold for. Can we do this here? The Mods lock the thread it can't be that hard to remove the edit at the time they close with a warning not to edit out the sold price. It might even help the community.

What say you?

I’m conflicted

Often I will sell something upwards of 10% less than market because I like to give back/help out

This could drive overall market prices down

even on unedited classifieds ads, you have no idea what the bike actually sold for unless the seller comes in and states it. the vast majority of sold items are only closed because one of the moderators stumble upon it, not because it's reported as the rules request... will more rules help?

mods de-editing:
it's maybe 3 more clicks and some typing. not all that hard, no, but not a task i'm eager to add to my list on a job i do for free. some sellers completely delete the description as well, do i restore that text as well? this starts getting too close to censorship issues for me, but i've been told i'm paranoid on this issue before.

and to what end really? comparable prices might be valid for a few months? the reason we lock and keep sold items visible is more to do with the history of an item in the world (particularly bikes) that can be tracked to keep future sellers honest, and buyers informed.

I do think the BARF classifieds are an awesome resource for members and i hope that i've made them better since accepting the task of steering that part of the ship (mixed metaphor, steering that dingy in the fleet?). If some kind of sale price policy is really needed i'm all ears but i am biased here, i don't see the benefit outweighing the effort. i also KNOW that the vast majority of posters won't notice the rule change just as they haven't noticed the heavy rework that was announced exactly 13 months ago, which circles back to the effort/reward thing.

please keep commenting, as i said i have biases but i am not unwilling to listen to ideas and while i'm nominally in charge of classifieds they aren't mine, they're yours and i'll do what i can to make it better

How about a standardized required format at the start of the post followed by free text? When a bike is sold, move that thread to a sold subforum.

In this way, the buyers get good info, the sellers get to put out good info with some help without restricting freeform submissions and everything in the classified is actually up for sale and all those sold are a click away.

Stop bumps. There is a reason why the bike isn't selling and usually its not because the price is too low. But the issue is also the clutter of really old ads sort of holding place.

My brief (not to be snarky) opinion is that it's none of your business what it sold for. A better way to approach this might be to reach out to the people who have successfully sold things on here and PM them about what it went for. That allows them the choice to divulge the info and also focuses your energy on the things that you're interested in. If you're just a casual seller, it can't be that much that you're needing info on. Ebay is an online auction--it's different in that auctions are all about publicly stating a price. Private sales are just that--private. I can't think of a private selling venue that makes the selling price publicly known.

You seem a bit high strung today, but I'll play.

Firstly, if someone is so ashamed at the price they received for an item that they guard it like a skeleton in a closet, that person has some serious insecurity/fragile ego issues.

Secondly, last I checked this is still a public forum and posting in the classifieds is actually public, read not private in any way whatsoever. I'm not asking for full disclosure of final sale, I simply think it could behoove the community to see the final asking price of their item after the item is sold.

Finally, I find it absolutely hilarious this was tossed in geek speak during some silly tantrum. Take the night off from time to time kids.

We have a Winner DH is correct its no ones business.....

How about having the viewers/potential buyers verify they actually have the $ to purchase the bike before chiming in....or contacting seller.....

Hmmm... Unjustifiably lazy retort is lazy. I get it, you're pushed too far via a few users, but remember I actually really like you and I'm not them. You were kind when I needed it, but you have to know we both deserve more than the phone in you just did here.

I'm not going to bulet point you about your online attitude as of late, but I'll take it easy, and maybe you would enjoy a little of the same.

I hope you have a great night.
