Hello fellow BARFer's...it has sadly been eons since I posted in the forum. Mostly since the lack of motorcycles in the garage is something I bury deep inside of me and try to forget :(

But...maybe that will change...my son is 6.5 years old. He started riding bikes last year and his balance and reflexes are amazing (at least to mom's eyes). We live out in Colorado now so our options aren't as prolific as California. I've been researching some, and trying to figure out how we start working with him to see if he has any interest/talent in competing.

Do you guys have recommendations for how to start?? Lessons?? Events?? Of course I'm all in on the mini bikes since I could probably ride it too :laughing

Edit: feel free to let me know if I should be in another forum...I'm so rusty I didn't recognize half the forums :cry

"Bikes" as in bicycle ?
My son started riding a PW50 at 4 years old. Took the training wheels off after 1 ride. Leave it up to him as for how serious he wants to be. My son loves riding but never wanted to race.

Well he grew up watching his old man ride and race. Used to hang out with me in the garage putting my screwdrivers in anything he could reach. But I just bought the bike. He jumped on it, went around the block and asked if we could take his training wheels off. Never looked back. At 12 he stopped riding. Was into baseball and football. So I sold his XR80...At 15, on his own, he informed me that he wanted to get a bike . He's been riding ever since. At no time did I push him to ride or not. Kids have to figure it out. The best thing you can provide is opportunity. The bike and the time to be with them.

My sons also traveled with me to race tracks. Even to practice at times.

When the old was 5 he wanted to ride and we got a JR 50. He started riding and was instantly super cool to the other kids.. horsepower elevated his self confidence. By the time he was 8 ball sports and team play became more important. Give them a shot at what they think they want.. and push them into somethings they may not seem to want (like learning how to swim...:p ) and let them choose the right path within your guidance limitations.

Nice to see you post Kelly!!

Lots of cool little BMX bikes these days. Just bought one for my grandson.

Totally agree -- we tried to push with the training wheels when he was 4. Wasn't interested. Year later he tried few times without training wheels, still wasn't into it, then a month later he asked to ride, without training wheels and he just took off.

See we don't have the motorcycles anymore so they aren't seeing us ride them...we were considering dirt bikes since Rampart is 15 mins away, but building up a full stable is pricey :rolleyes

Yes...Budman it's been a while!!! Good to feel the love!! I'll be back in Cali for fleetweek. It's been two years I think :wow

I like the idea of the electric bike as a trial, too!! We see them around here and they tend to come/go quick. If I can figure it out, it looks like the Super Camp comes to Colorado in January also.

Thanks guys for all the great options!!! We also want to take him to some races to see what sparks his interest.
