Yeah, it's a great bike. The less strong points are that it's the same size as the FZ1 and that turns off us power hungry Americans. Yamaha has a lot invested into this bike, so it should be here for some years to come.

yeah, when you get less power you usually want more of something else, don't ya?

I think it's great we have this on the market here. People will still compare it to the Street Triple. But it's much more competitive now and styling is pretty good. Considering the upgrades and the yen the price is very good (plus Yam dealerships deal more)

I don't get it? isn't it majorly the same as the previous years' FZ8????

at most I think there is some new hole at the start of the silencer;
and maybe the headlight is changed to look more witchy.

p.s. 39 MPG advertised ... hmm , may be good compared to R6, CBR or SuperDuke.. but definitely not to any other 650 or 800??

Well the main thing is fully adjustable suspension now (vs. rear preload-only last year). But the FI is also retuned and the exhaust is new (and better looking).

Sitting on one of these vs. an FZ1 is a pretty different feeling. The powerband is also tuned differently, less top-heavy than the FZ1. (edit: and it handles a bit quicker with a smaller rear wheel...)

39 mpg isn't the greatest I'll grant you that. Although I think the Street Triple doesn't do better, nor does, say, a Monster 796. This bike is around 100 hp though IIRC so it's not really comparable to the 650 twins.

Wish it came in multiple colors.

I guess I could see some people saying this bike is boring. But I'm just excited that it's an all around just quality motorcycle with no glaring faults anymore at a reasonable price. The market needs bikes like that.

i do not know about the 2013 units. but all the rest were watered down FZ1's.
smaller bore, same weight. (delete the faring). cheep forks and rear shock.
more cash at the dealers. and wait for months for it to be ordered and arrive. :rofl

What kind of imbecile would compare this bike to a Street Triple?

Oh, yeah, I remember...

They have a 2012 at a dealer nearby I was gonna check it out in my quest for the 2nd bike. What do you guys think about this as a bike after a 250? I've got 10,000 miles in about a year on the 250 and am looking to spend some more $ irresponsibly :teeth

39 mpg advertised means maybe 30-35 mpg in real riding. that's disappointing for what's being slotted as a practical midsize standard

the days of cheap gas and abundant disposable middle class income are over, I'm thinking Honda has the future nailed with their NC700

MCN USA got 44mpg on the FZ8 they tested in '11.

A guy on the MotoUSA forum who just got an NC700 is getting 77mpg! :wtf

I thought 52 from my F800ST was good!

Go for it!

I bet they'll have the 2013 at the IMS San Mateo this year so you can try before you buy.

Had a chance to demo the 2012 model and thought it was just OK. Wasn't completely impressed. But the updates on the 2013 got me excited.

Performance bikes are dead eh?

Narp. The STR is a nimble, lean bike with excellent brakes and suspension and a sweet engine, and weighs a fair bit less than the FZ8. I get mid-40s mpg, but who's counting...

I never understood all the fuss around the STR, and figured it must be hype. Then I rode one, and it isn't. It's set a standard for high-end middleweights that's hard to beat. The FZ8 is cheaper new, which is a mark in its favor.

The NC700X, on paper, falls short of the Versys, so it'll be interesting to see where that one lands. :laughing

:thumbup Sometimes the magic happens...And it happened in the STR.

It also takes a savvy rider (like You) to bring out the magic.

A putz makes every bike a putz bike.
