2011 Ford Edge Sport vs 2009 Infiniti FX35

Im looking for a sporty midsize suv. I need it to have AWD so it can at least tackle snowy roads but not really expecting much in terms of serious offroading. Getting good mpg would be nice but anything over 12 city and 18 highway and I'd be happy. I think I have it narrowed down between the Edge Sport and the FX35. I want to spend under $30,000 and preferably something closer to $20,000. I want something that will have power, handel relatively well and be fun to drive while looking good. I think I have covered all the bases, any thoughts from the collective wisdom of tEh BarF's?

I don't know much about either SUVs, but if it were me, I'd get the FX35 just because it seems like it would be a higher-end vehicle. Now as far as AWD capabilities, I'd do my research. I know the 3.5L VQ35D (or whatever the code is nowadays) is a solid engine used in many applications (ie: G35, Altimas, Maximas, 350Z etc). I've driven my buddie's FX35 and it was friggin NICE.

The FX would handle way better than the Edge.

Absolutely. I'm sure it's faster too.

I think the Edge has more utility to it though. Haven't comoared them side to side or anything, but based on looks alone I'd say the Edge has more room inside.

However if you want them for snow use, skip the large wheel option for either one. I know the Infiniti has a 20" option and the Ford has 22" on the Edge Sport.

don't know about the infinity, but I just test drove the edge and the explorer...comparitively, the edge has much more hollow/cheaper feeling than the explorer: in the doors, in the handling, all around. most likely why it's a cheaper vehicle.

I've got the Nissan Murano and I LOVE it. It has many more luxury features (heated seats & steering wheel, back seats recline, etc.) than I would have expected. I looked at the FX35, but as I regularly have tall & big people in the back seat, I chose the Murano. Seriously, sit in the back seats of both vehicles and you'll understand. Also, the Murano has a much bigger trunk area. I've got the SL model (second highest) - 2011 with just over 64,000 miles. ALSO, it's a V6 rather than a 4+turbo, which means regular gas, not premium. :teeth

THanks for the responses so far, good food for thought. So either car would be supplementing my other vehicle which is a ford flex with ecoboost (which I dearly love). So trunk space is not necessarily all that important. The flex is the people hauler and can tow my trailer and motos. I haven't checked out the infiniti in person but I did with the edge at Sunnyvale Ford. The edge has lots of cool amenities especially with the panoramic roof. While I like the interface of my 2011 Flex I'm not that big of a fan on the Edges interface. Small buttons ect. The back seat of the edge was surprisingly roomy and the rear seat was able to tilt back which gave extra passenger room. I have heard the FX isn't really that roomy but is more oriented toward luxury and driving performance than all around practicality like the Edge. As far as the wheels are concerned, the Edge sport comes with 22' wheels which I would probably sell and replace with 20's and the infiniti comes with 20's. For snow I would lean toward getting a snow/winter tire rather than all weather M+S tires.

I have a Ford Escape and 350z. Both relatives of the offerings you are considering. Based on my experience, you really can't go too wrong with either. The FX35 motor is rock solid although there were some oil consumption issues with mid year Z cars. The Fords are standard utility cars. On the cheaper end of the spectrum, but reliable and well wroth the money you are likely to pay.
