2009 Ninja 250 won't start

Posting for a colleague.

Got a maintenance quandary for y'all. Have a problem that's happened twice in about 3 years. Bike ('09 Ninja 250) doesn't start after being off for a couple of weeks (first time was 3 weeks, this time was 12 days). Both times the tank has been relatively empty but had gas. Engine turns. There is an occasional light backfire after attempting for a while, but no smell of gas as if my engine were flooded.

After the first time I have left the bike off for similar time periods with a full tank and not had the issue; I just forgot this time. Part of me feels that the level in the tank is me being superstitious, but that's could be just me not understanding what the cause could be.

Both times, to fix it I drained my carburetor bowls (second time I also had to recharge my battery but that was more due to draining it after trying to start so many times, so likely secondary), so the running theory is that there's some condensation/water getting in them.

Curious if anyone has any insight.

A long shot as it takes awhile for fuel to evaporate to any significant degree in the float bowls, but perhaps the level is going down enough in that period of time to cause problems. If your bike has a manual petcock with a prime position, next time the bike sits for a time, before starting the bike, switch the petcock to prime.

What time of the year did these two instances happen? Was it during the rainy season?

As for when they occurred, the latest one was just recently, and it's been pretty mild and dry down here in So Cal. I'll ask about the first one, and suggest the prime option if it's viable.

Thanks.

Always top off the tank if the bike is going to be sitting. An empty tank is an invite for water to condense and then you end up with a rusty tank. Also, Ninja 250 is notorious for needing EVERYTHING to be right to start quickly. They draw such small vacuum that if your valve adjustments are off it will cause problems starting.

The battery in those is very small. Be sure you run a quality battery like a MotoBatt, Deka or Yuasa AGM with a maintenance charger, always.

Float bowl valve sticking closed.

Strainer, inside tank, on petcock feed clogged.

Vacuum leak in manifold rubber.

Choke out of adjustment.
