Check Kelly Blue book, NADA, CycleTrader, Ebay, Craigslist (even though some people on Craigslist are asking non-realistically high prices and will never be able to sell the bike at their asking price), and know what the current market value of a similar bike is before considering a purchase. Consider the maintenance work or fixes that YOU need to do to the bike, and factor that into the price. It is ok to pay more for a bike that has had all of the maintenance work done to it recently, or pay less and get a bike that needs some work, but you must know this in advance and be ok with it.
    • Inspecting the bike: if you are not experienced yourself, have a mechanic or an experienced friend check the bike before making a purchase. Crashed bikes:This is even more important if you are buying a bike that is being sold at a cheaper price with damages that the buyer is required to fix. In these cases, doing a frame check that will show any frame/fork/geometry damages is HIGHLY recommended. Do NOT simply rely on the information that the seller is providing, even he/she may not be aware of all the problems. Have the crashed bike checked and know what you are getting into.
    • Clean title, Salvage title A clean title doesn't mean the bike is free of serious issues. A Salvaged title doesn't mean the bike may have any problems. Every case is different. Some bikes are seriously damaged in a crash, but an insurance claim is never made on them, so they still have a clean title. Some bikes have had mostly cosmetic damages in a crash, but the insurance company decided to pay off the bike and salvage the title rather than spending the money to fix it. Know what you are getting into and don't make any assumptions based on what the seller is telling you.
    • Registration: Know about the current registration status of the bike. Check with DMV if you have any questions about any possible back fees and other title/registration questions (out of state title, no title with bill of sales only, etc.) before purchasing the bike.

    • Comments within a sale thread should be on topic and educational. Aggressive critiques and inside jokes will not be tolerated. Don't fuck it up, because the next step is disabling the "reply" feature entirely.
    • If you disagree with a price, keep it to yourself. The seller has set the price. If you don't like it, don't buy it and move on. If you really feel strongly about it, then PM the seller.

Got this bike a number of years ago with plans to make it into an enduro. I've got 3 550's and this one never made the plan and I don't need three. Has full enduro kit (lights, signals, battery), super low miles and an MSO (never titled in CA). Graphics and plastics are in great shape for it's age, motor has great compression, WP 50 extreme forks, Ohlins shock (stock stuff). Only mod I made to it from stock was swapping the stock Del'orto for a PWK 38mm (easier to jet). Has a highly sought after M-07 pipe in perfect shape. Seals in the forks are leaky but you can get replacements on Ebay for $40; seat got torn (pictured).
If you know about these bikes they have quite a bit of power (60+ rwhp stock) and weight around 240. Big bore means lower rpms so the motors last a long time. If you know how to do it you could likely get a plate for this. I am the third owner, MSO lists a dealer and one other person before me.

Have it listed on CL but would rather sell it here (1% to BARF).

Yeah, you're right 2stroke. My LC4 had the 50 extremes, I got them mixed up. Ended up putting 48mm from an 05 on my hot rod 550....too many bikes and forks....

I had a KTM500MXC. Big brute of a bike, this one just has more power. It actually started fairly easy for a 500cc 2 stroke, certainly easier than my CR500s. The guy I bought it from actually started it with his hand and the left side kick starter. Big, reliable bikes. Very stable.

I'd love to have another one, but I don't think I'm strong enough to ride a 500 or 550 any more.

A buddy of mine had a really nice 500 dialed in for MX that I rode a few times,very different bike. The 500 spool up and wind out better, the 550 have great low and mid range but flatten out up top. One of the reasons they're deceptive speed wise. Even though you never get to that over-rev your already going 60 mph without trying. The later models ('95-'96) they put in the low slung tanks that make them slimmer in the waist and a lower C of G.

Yep, still available. I got a few new pistons and a rod kit soon after posting this so I could plate it and run it. I may be persuaded to part with one to go with the bike if we can work out the details.

Yep still around. I've been playing around with my built '93 550, just put a Lectron on it and am trying to get it tuned. I swear kicking my '93 makes the stocker feel like a 300.....that's what I get for building a 70 hp dirt bike....

Interesting, the problem with newer KTMs is they have left side drive rather than the rt on the 565 series (550, 500, 440). The PDS shock is offset to the wrong side making pipe routing a nightmare. The guys I know who have swapped to new frames rebuilt the pipe (usually from a KX 500) and routed it to the rt side but that one you posted looks like they were able to get it through on the left. That bike also has linkage so the KTM return to that might just provide a platform for a swap.....not that I have 10k to buy a new bike to mod but it does make you think, how nice would a 550 in a new chassis be!? I have three of these motors.....Two in bikes and one on a shelf.

Is that a Zabel?! They like to use them in cart racing and make a 650 and 750 (I think). Developed by the same guy that designed the 565 series (Dr Hattinger)....same bottom end with a bigger bore (like you need it). Supposedly they don't rev but have great low end, must be hard to control wheelspin with 60-70 ft lbs of torque on a 230 lb bike.....
