Consider the maintenance work or fixes that YOU need to do to the bike, and factor that into the price. It is ok to pay more for a bike that has had all of the maintenance work done to it recently, or pay less and get a bike that needs some work, but you must know this in advance and be ok with it.
    • Inspecting the bike: if you are not experienced yourself, have a mechanic or an experienced friend check the bike before making a purchase. Crashed bikes:This is even more important if you are buying a bike that is being sold at a cheaper price with damages that the buyer is required to fix. In these cases, doing a frame check that will show any frame/fork/geometry damages is HIGHLY recommended. Do NOT simply rely on the information that the seller is providing, even he/she may not be aware of all the problems. Have the crashed bike checked and know what you are getting into.
    • Clean title, Salvage title A clean title doesn't mean the bike is free of serious issues. A Salvaged title doesn't mean the bike may have any problems. Every case is different. Some bikes are seriously damaged in a crash, but an insurance claim is never made on them, so they still have a clean title. Some bikes have had mostly cosmetic damages in a crash, but the insurance company decided to pay off the bike and salvage the title rather than spending the money to fix it. Know what you are getting into and don't make any assumptions based on what the seller is telling you.
    • Registration: Know about the current registration status of the bike. Check with DMV if you have any questions about any possible back fees and other title/registration questions (out of state title, no title with bill of sales only, etc.) before purchasing the bike.

    • Comments within a sale thread should be on topic and educational. Aggressive critiques and inside jokes will not be tolerated. Kimchee, R1... RS125r... I think you'd be really bummed with the power difference, no?

I mean 150 hp, vs like 40 or so? I know it'd handle like a badass on the track, but it's old tech even.

None the less, a 25k race bike for $1400, sounds nice to me too sorta..

Yeah, yeah, yeah... It is old technology. It is a PRE 1995 model and makes less than 40 hp BUT it will be fun!!!

Weight of 180 lbs and less than 40 hp is what you should expect for the average 125. It is a single cylinder so it would be much easier/cheaper to work on it yourself than a 250 that has TWO cylinders
Two strokes need the top to be rebuild every 400 miles and a major rebuild every 1,600 miles.
I am getting into it because it would be nice to eventually get into amateur racing and the 125 is the cheapest way to do it.
Go to some AFM races and check the divicions. I really wanted a 600 but that class is just crazy!!!!

I used to race a '93 ... if no one has mentioned it to you yet, be sure to loctite and safety wire everything ... every bolt on the bike. Nothing like going for your front brake heading into t4 at Sears and having the lever not be there because the bolt vibrated out.

The power difference is a lot less than your "nicky gayden hotshit" rc-51 ducky hehe ....but like you said yourself, it will make you eat crap at the track, given the right rider....I found myself slowly getting away from big bikes once I started track riding because it just doesn't take that much skill to go straight fast....and then PANIC BRAKE at the turns :laughing . Laugh at the little exhaust all you want, you'll aways be seeing it in front of you only hehe :teeth . I'm just fuggin around, but the bike is great....sometimes only the people who really know about corner speed and riding go for the good stuff! :teeth
