Consider the maintenance work or fixes that YOU need to do to the bike, and factor that into the price. It is ok to pay more for a bike that has had all of the maintenance work done to it recently, or pay less and get a bike that needs some work, but you must know this in advance and be ok with it.
    • Inspecting the bike: if you are not experienced yourself, have a mechanic or an experienced friend check the bike before making a purchase. Crashed bikes:This is even more important if you are buying a bike that is being sold at a cheaper price with damages that the buyer is required to fix. In these cases, doing a frame check that will show any frame/fork/geometry damages is HIGHLY recommended. Do NOT simply rely on the information that the seller is providing, even he/she may not be aware of all the problems. Have the crashed bike checked and know what you are getting into.
    • Clean title, Salvage title A clean title doesn't mean the bike is free of serious issues. A Salvaged title doesn't mean the bike may have any problems. Every case is different. Some bikes are seriously damaged in a crash, but an insurance claim is never made on them, so they still have a clean title. Some bikes have had mostly cosmetic damages in a crash, but the insurance company decided to pay off the bike and salvage the title rather than spending the money to fix it. Know what you are getting into and don't make any assumptions based on what the seller is telling you.
    • Registration: Know about the current registration status of the bike. Check with DMV if you have any questions about any possible back fees and other title/registration questions (out of state title, no title with bill of sales only, etc.) before purchasing the bike.

Coming out of a private collection ... this bike is a beauty. Dynamic British style and flash .. all there, very original. Features exceptionally low mileage - under 9K original miles. Overall condition is very clean and correct, close to 100% original, never modded or molested. Some patina and minor surface rust, generally good chrome and original paintwork. Certainly not perfect, but pretty damn good for 49 years old.

One of the last BSA model years to feature the chrome tank and large BSA star badges, the Thunderbolt shows impressively and is a true eye-catcher. Great overall condition, attractive cosmetics and solid mechanicals.

This 1970 model is seen by many as the last "good" BSA ... all the detail improvements and fixes, none of the failed "modernizations". The Thunderbolt features an easy to tune single carb head and this bike starts readily, idles smooth and runs strong. Very clean shifting and clutch action thru the unit construction 4 speed gearbox. No issues, no problems - mechanical or electrical, everything works as it should. This has always been a very dependable and trouble free bike.

On the road you’ll experience the classic Brit sound and a sure riding feeling … a very fun bike to ride. Features a very stylish and comfortable dual saddle and mid-rise bars. Suspension is supple and solid, the moderate seat height and very reasonable weight contribute to easy handling. Brakes are typical of the period and in perfect working order. Vibration is minimal when cruising in the sweet spot around 55-60 mph.

This machine has a clean California title and current registration, ready to ride and experience. Great looking, nice riding, no problems classic that is ready to enjoy or add to a Brit bike collection.

MODEL HISTORY : 1970 BSA Thunderbolt A65

BSA introduced their unit-construction 650 parallel twin in 1962. The 654cc machine started life as the A65 Star basic model, with various offshoots developing through the decade. The Lightning versions sported twin carbs, as did the highly-strung Spitfire which was intended for competition use. The single-carb Thunderbolt fulfilled more of an everyday, touring role, and by 1968 it sported 12-Volt electrics, a Concentric carb, two-way fork damping and an improved clutch to go with its four-speed gearbox.

The 75mm by 64mm motor typically ran 9:1 compression to produce 42 bhp at 6800 rpm. Fully fueled with four gallons of gas the bike weighed around 440 lb. Its top speed was slightly less than the 100 mph mark, with a standing quarter taking 15.5 seconds or so. The Thunderbolt will go from zero to 60mph in 7.4 seconds. The twin-carb Lightning of the same year, claimed to house an extra ten horses, was only marginally quicker - 15.2 seconds to cover a standing quarter mile and with a 102 mph top velocity.

The 1970 model Thunderbolt was the last year of this classic series, considered by many to be one of the most collectable BSA models. Big changes were ahead for the 1971 models as BSA went to the unloved and unsound oil-in-frame designs featuring “modern” styling touches. The revamp was not universally appreciated and the new models proved troublesome. Sales tanked and the company folded in 1973. So the final years of the previous decade are considered by many to be the easiest to live with and most desirable unit construction machines. Easy to maintain and great fun to ride, the 1970 A65T is a popular choice for modern classic bike fans.
