15000 miles, shock service?

Hi all,

I have a 2004 gsxr 600. I'm taking it to a suspension shop to have the forks serviced and shock resprung. The suspension shop guy suggested I have the shock serviced as well. Is he trying to upsell me? Is it worth doing at this point?

up to u. yes, the shock is no longer working as the factory intended it too. the oil has degraded and its probably light on damping now. if you are getting it resprung, its a good idea to get it revalved to both match your weight and the new spring. but... its def not like you are going to die if u dont do it (as long as its not leaking). if its a shop u trust and like, y not spend the money at a local business and end up w/ an awesome result.

cheaper to throw it out and buy a low mileage one on ebay. You can often find them for $35 with a few thou miles on them. If you are going a bit lighter with the spring you will probably be ok. Otherwise you will end up wanting to revalve it as well.

Hey Jon,

To answer your question, a shock is like the forks and should be serviced once a year, especially if you ride it all the time or do a lot of track days. If you only put 4 or 5K on your bike in a year and maybe only a couple of track days a year, you could go up to two years before service.

How many miles on it? 5k? use it. 15k? replace it. You can't tell if it is good by looking at it. I suggest you respring it and try it. Remember, a respring, service and revalve is going to cost you close to $350.... For that price you can try and find a used aftermarket shock. And end up with something that is high quality.
