101N Rolling Closure Yesterday - anyone know the cause?

After deciding to stop off at REI my way home yesterday, getting back on the freeway was delayed by CHP motos shutting down the on-ramps as what looked to be a CHP escorted convoy passed by in lane 1. Traffic was a complete mess as a result.

There must have been about 10 motorcycles caught behind. No one wanted to split past the convoy (for good reason given that the CHP vehicles escorting has their lights on) so many moved over to lanes 4 and 5 and tried to route around them there. Fortunately I only had two exits to go at that part of my journey so I was able to escape the mess pretty quickly.

Just wondering if anyone knows what the big deal was all about.

101 runs the length of the West Coast. But I suppose you're talking about the Peninsula/

I stay off of it as much as possible, though, between SF and San Jose nothing good ever happens on it. 280 , 35, 1 or car, if I have to be on 101.
