02 65sx won't hit the pipe

I just acquired this bike and it runs just fine except when I try to get it on the pipe; it just doesn't hit and sputters.

Starts up real nice, idles well... but no top end.

While fiddling with this bike I've performed the following:

cleaned the carb (cleared jets... they weren't clogged)
repacked the can
cleaned air filter
changed oil
flushed coolant
looked over for obvious "untied shoelaces" which includes reeds, cracks in connecting boots, improper functioning of choke, throttle, brakes, bearings, suspension components, plastic orientation, time of day, menstrual cycle... etc.

I've yet to check compression but I don't have a hard start so I wasn't concerned too much. (I've got a new top end waiting on deck.)

So... what else should I check?

I'll try a new plug and see how it goes.

yup... aren't too many 4T engines out there that hit the pipe... AFAIK.

The term is most often used with 2 Stroke engines, and their expansion chamber shapes...But it is used along with "comes on the cam", it can also be comes on the pipe, with tuners that build pipes...Even different pipes for different tracks.

I don't know you and how You use terms....So I had to ask to get it clear.

Now I know two things...I know the reason of your problem...and that You can get your answer, somewhere else. :laughing

Anyone that gets my tuning help..talks like they would want it.

Thanks Lou. As always, you're a lot of words with no help.

I know two things too. You google the things when you're intellect is in question. And you google a lot.

Happy new year! :laughing

Power valves were first used in 2009 for the 65sx... but agreed, they get fuxored.

Edit: Also, I thoroughy cleaned out the FMF pipe when I repacked it.

It sounds like a jetting issue. Check out Spankey's Jetting Guide. It is on a bunch of motorcycle forums. Good luck

Since you already eliminated the fueling I would start looking at the ignition advance system as the most likely culprit. If its not that then the problem could be in the wiring-specifically the spark plug wire, something tells me that you are getting enough juice to start and run but not enough when you wind it up. Good luck.

Can't imagine something other than jetting....guess you better check the valves.

Do a leak down test to make sure the crank seals or gaskets aren't leaking. If you can't do leak down test try reading the plug for indication of lean mixture and(in case of bad clutch side crank seal)...oily deposits.
also check coil for good ground (and spark plug cap for proper fit).
