01 GSXR Streetfighter Project

We're talking about the bike in my avatar. I've had this bike since new, and I always said I would never outride it, and that I would either ride it to the ground or it would do the same to me.

Over the last decade we have each tried really hard to survive each other with our relationship having its ups and downs, mostly ups, although you can throw in a broken clavicle (my fault), torn rotator cuff and broken distal tibia (got hit by a truck as I was pulling into a gas station, his fault).

When I had my older daughter 3 1/2 years ago, my ride got relegated from daily ride to occasional commute duty and even more occasional track days. Since the birth of my second daughter 1 1/2 years ago, my bike got relegated to garage duty with one fling at Thunder Hill.

For the 10th Anniversary of BARF I thought I would breathe new life into the old girl. I am still planning on doing the occasional trackday (and we'll talk about those challenges later), but I've always thought the 01G1K was born for the street. Hence, it makes sense to "streetfighter" my girl.

Now, with two kids, two dogs, two cats, and a mortgage, I have lots of aspirations and no motivation. Hence I am recruiting the help of my dear friends, who have helped shape our community. I plan to ride this bike as a streetfighter to the Spring Rally in mid May with the help of MotoLiam and ElSkippador, both of whom are definitely "bad for the community."

If you have any ideas, throw them at me. The only thing I will not do is put flames on the bike, I leave that to Pelon, that sexy bitch.

Liam is already working on a custom HID headlamp, and mini fairing, and rerouting the wiring. The bike has HELI bars on it already, but we have already discussed MX type bars.

Those involved in the project will be adding photos to my smugmug gallery. For your viewing pleasure here is a link: (very little going on at the moment, but you get the idea of what we are starting out with)

Attention to detail is everything. One key aspect is reducing the clutter of hoses and wiring through elimination, rerouting or trick covering. Up grade fasteners to stainless socket head cap screws or button heads. Once you decide on handle bars and clamps you can add radial masters, trick levers and SST lines. Billet alternator covers, etc can be color anodized, polished or chromed if desired. Good luck.

I too am thinking of doing this to my ZX9R, the plastic is becoming half ratted out, due to its insistence on laying down in my driveway, so instead of zipties and epoxy, maybe streetfighter is the way to go, I have one question is your airbox pressurized as well, another words will I have trouble forcing air into it f I take off all the ram air crap except for the tubes sticking out of the frame???

Thanks Bap! To give everyone more of an idea of what the finished bike will look like, here some photos of the prototype of the headlight I will be constructing for Bap's project. It is a two piece aluminum housing over a billet ring that a projector beam is mounted to, and everything is held together with stainless steel or titanium fasteners. There is a small LED halo and also an HID installed (ballast will likely be installed within the frame under the tank). Because I want to preserve the front fairing mounting points (so stock/track fairings can easily be bolted back up, the headlight housing will need to be clearanced to sit as flush to the steering head as possible. One issue that will make this more of a challenge will be the offset ignition tumbler, but we will jump that hurdle when I have the bike in my possession at my design studio.

More than likely, I will also create a unique carbon fiber fly screen to protect the backside of the digital gauge cluster (OEM GSXR) and gear indicator, and will fabricate a custom gauge mount from aluminum to keep the front end as light and tidy as possible.

At lower speeds (street/freeway) you likely won't notice the lack of ram air, but at high speeds (100+ and near max RPM) at the track, you'll drop a few HP. Bap's frameholes for the airbox will be filled with modified and shortened tubes that will incorporate mesh screens to help filter out small children and birds.

Exactly, though I think of the industrial design work from Tron, as well.

Welcome to the future, my friends :)

Wanna see me do it again?
I think having the classic streetfighter tail would look pretty great and aggressive. What about Shorty levers? And maybe some cutting on the front fender (i'll look for a link).

Good luck to you on this project, man! I'll be sticking around to watch and do whatever I can to help.

gone for now
I think I still have a Spiegler top triple for an 03/04 1000 sitting around. You'd need to make up a spacer with 25mm ID and 28mm OD on a lathe for it to fit, but that's easy for anyone with a lathe - D'Ecosse made one for me.

Let me know if you're interested.
