Ok well sorry about the large photos.

We land on a dirt strip in Moremi National Park and are met with our awesome guide Gee...

...This was about the point I knew this trip was going to be good...

Fucking AWESOME! Good for you, brutha.

Ok, maybe this will work. I have a photobucket account.

So annnnywaaayyyyyyy..... There we were sitting next to a big male lion. Another big male lion and a female were lounging a little bit away. Here are a couple of photos:

LOL, I was going to post that 99% of us will be looking at the lion's face. Guess you're a 1%er.

So, we were wandering around Moremi, looking at giraffes, zebras, and cape buffalo, as well as the ubiquitous impala

We were there during the mating season for impala and they make this ridiculous noise. It's only slightly, but drastically different than the nise they make when threatened (alarm call). All of a sudden our guide says "Hold on, alarm call" and hit the gas. We fly across a very sketchy bridge and into a field just in time to see a big male cheetah wandering around at sunset

Will post more photos tonight.

Wow. Great pics, would love to go some day. I know a guy in Raleigh who grew up in South Africa and does m/c tours there, it's on the bucket list for sure.

Money well spent on skipping the iPhone.

Can you share details about the trip? Logistics, where you were staying, rough costs and such?

Prior to the trip I decided that my broken iPhone wasn't an appropriate camera so I purchased a Nikon D330 with a 28-55 and 55-300 mm lens kit. I am not a photographer. These photographs show you how fucking amazing it is there.

Dude, the pics are fucking sweet! Do you have a lot of garbage to sort through, or are most of the pics similar to these?

I mean the focus, the subject being centered...nice work Mike.

The sketchy bridge we flew cross to see the cheetah:

The fortuitous stop when we got stuck in a mud hole. Gee and I are trying to unstick the truck, while our faithful companion Rajesh made Gin and Tonics.

Because of this stop, we were late and ended up seeing that cheetah.

Kevin,
As far as garbage, yeah. I took 1800 photos. Most are not horrible and would be totally acceptable as pictures. A few are great. But there is so much stuff there it's hard not to take amazing photos. Like impossible. I'm only at Day 2.....

So we basically watched the cheetah and went back to camp. We had a fantastic meal and drank a bunch of wine around the campfire, then went to bed.

Tremendous photos, especially if you're really a novice!

Was it ever sort of hairball knowing that the creatures and animals you were photographing were, you know, OUT THERE while you were sleeping in tents? I think that would sort of wig me out.

A little bit. You could hear lots of things moving around. Lions roaring, elephants banging the trees right outside our tent to knock the seed pods off, which then landed on the tent. Leopards coughing next to the tent and waking up to see leopard and hyena tracks surrounding your tent. It may have bene a little scary, but mostly just fucking cool.

We left the following morning, heading for Khwai. Khwai was interesting as it had a greater chance of seeing wild dogs (one of Africa's most endangered species) and there were lots of elephants there. We hadn't seen too many elephants; that was about to change.

This is a jackal

This here was two elephants battling. A large male showing a smaller male who was boss:

As we rolled into Khwai a large herd of impala ran at us. Our guide immediately realized they were being chased by the wild dogs by the way they ran. Sure enough, soon came 7 wild dogs. They were amazing in the way they hunted. Silently, spread out and flanking the impala. Genius.

One thing I never really thought about was the danger to these predators of hunting. It seems they are always hurting themselves by either being gouged by branches or being kicked by animals This wild dog has a huge gash behind his front shoulder.

And some storks too.
