No, I think I met him in 1983, at the first test of the VF750R at Laguna Seca.
I just talked to him the other day.
Mike is still working on bikes at The Brothers Powersports in Bremerton, WA.

Don't let that out! That was Sue the girl I went to Africa with and the guy is Craig McLane who has done a few of the Isle of Man races on vintage stuff and his dad use to own Motorcycles Unlimited in Marin Co.

Going through the boxes at the time I started this thread I know I found some pics of your old CX Turbo and Pantah, and interestingly found a pic or two of the day Briggs' Hailwood Replica was uncrated. (I hope I can find them again....)
Those would be good.
I think some of the posted pictures of that CB1100R may be Briggs bikes as well.
There were not many of those around in the uSA back then.

Don't know who the guy on the pickup truck is, but the guy on the back of the box van is Terry Yarger. He's the one who actually made the Vetter Mystery Ship fairing mold...according to him.

That should be Niall Mackenzie, who finished 5th in 1987 when Gardner won and rode the HB Honda that year and the following year. He led that race pictured at Laguna until his brakes faded.
No he was racing Ducati Superbikes the year Gardner wore the #1 plate.

John Bettencourt was our racing instructor at Loudon in the spring of 1987 at the new racer school (I was on an '83 Honda FT500) ...
Nice guy ... taught us to get our knees over the grass at the edge of that track ... We watched his brother race flatrack later that evening at the short track they used to have at Bryar Motorsports Park ... he told me his brother had raced an FT500 set up as a flat tracker ...
John won the Loudon National in 1978 on a Suzuki, I think ...
