I just heard part of a story that this is a significant mode of communication.
How? Aren’t the just funny clips?
Please esplain to this old fart. I am slightly younger than “boomer” however.

From where I stand the good ones are based on humor. Others.... most are a mixed bag of :jaded

Memes started as jokes. Take a photo out of context, add a joke at the top, a punchline at the bottom, and you're meme-ing.

Now sites like MemeGenerator let you meme any image you like automagically.

Simply put, they are a way of conveying popcorn-size bites of information in an easy to interpret and mostly meaningless fashion. They are the comics pages of the modern world.

...and contain roughly as much meaningful information. They matter, though...

Image removed for political content

Edit: Don't remember what the image even was, but it was benign and relevant.

Wow.
Old fart learns something. I conclude:

Because the news is too much in text format, a video isn't quite easy enough, with a meme can share your opinion instantly with your pals. Five million of them in the tweeterverse. Pals you don’t even know. And then they...

...this would prompt political comment, but then this thread would be moved into that forum...

I had no idea it was so pervasive. Allegedly. According to the “news” I was listening to in the car.

They also propagate on image-only sites like Instagram and Snapchat, Tumblr and the like- that's really where they came into full bloom. They bridge a gap between images and the need to convey small amounts of information with them.

Meme's are about the worst thing that has happened to this country, it gives a ton of people the ability to manipulate, mislead and take cheap shots at just about anybody. They appeal to out basest instincts and almost always have a teenage boy approach to humor.

They are pretty much like today's headline news, trying to trigger an emotional response from people with very little effort made to stick to the truth.

Memes can be used to communicate a lot of different things. They can be heavily politicized, they can inform, etc.

At their base, they should do two things:

Make you laugh

Provide a sense of connection to others over a cultural reference.

I have a photo shoot in mind for this meme stuff,

A whole new art form to explore with photography, with boomer sensibilities.

Just explains are poor linguistic skills and impatience to actually talk to people.

Similar to this "That feeling when you....."

I hate those memes or types of talk. I want to respond on Facebook when I see what with "What feeling? what about it?"

It's not a complete sentence.

Boils down to laziness and probably proves we reading less and are probably getting dumber.
