China quarantines city of 18 million to try to contain virus

People get caught up in counts and they overlook the virulence

44,000 infected
1,100 deceased
6,500 serious condition

You have an almost 20% chance of being hospitalized due to this.

This assumes the reports out of China are accurate... which is very questionable.

It seems then most people have mild to moderate symptoms and in the US, most people would just consider it a cold and go to work anyway. That's probably already happening now.

We've only a couple cases so far in the US so it's hard to say what would happen, especially with the messaging we're seeing. I will say in my office, they would show up...

Santa Clara announced a second case yesterday and declared an emergency, because of how virulent this is.

perspective
CBSA 41940 Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose (Stanford to Hazel Hawkins) has a population of 1.2M but only has 3,729 hospital beds with an approx availability of about 2,250 beds (40ish percent utilization of staffed beds).

Could we build a hospital in a week :laughing

Here is an article with experts talking about 2/3 or the worlds population.

Coronavirus 'could infect 60% of global

While that is not 100%, it's most of the world. Don't think that the Bay Area won't be significantly impacted.

Then there are the mutations that can come around multiple times.

Please don’t go spreading fear. That all that article is doing. The Bay Area will see its share of the virus but we’re not going to be impacted significantly. There are no signs of that at all for any other country outside of China.

At some point, we are likely to see community spread in the U.S. or in other countries,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call. “This will trigger a change in our response strategy.”

Health officials had confirmed 13 U.S. cases of the virus

The CDC said Tuesday that a mistake at a lab led U.S. health officials to release an infected coronavirus patient from a San Diego hospital. The patient had been evacuated from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, on a government-chartered flight last week.

---yep, no risk to America because 'murica

I'm not saying be terrified but there is a very real chance we see an outbreak occur here.

We'll see how this plays out over the next several months. Then we can re-visit this debate to see if I was over-reacting or you were under-reacting.

There are some unknowns here, I don't think that either of us think we're getting the full truth from China.

Yeah... :rofl

Think burning man hospital in the desert. All patients and no staff. :p

Granted. I never said 100%. I said All of Us. Meaning that we all live and interact with the rest of the population, it's eventually going to get to us. I don't know of any BARFER's living in a remote village that is out of contact with the rest of the world, but I may be mistaken.

Sorry man.. did not mean to insinuate you did.

And there is one barfer ...Lou... :laughing

Since he is off the grid he cannot barf anymore. :(

Sorry, man, the words get slung around, the batter splatters on everybody, then we're all covered in it before long. :laughing :twofinger

When I saw the videos of all those earth movers digging at once in close proximity, I thought that doesn't look like they're building a hospital.:afm199

There has been some crazy speculation about volume of deaths being significantly higher.

Trying to extrapolate truth is hard without real data. But they can't hide it forever...

It was on the news today that China changed the methodology in quantifying the number of cases. That is why we see a substantial jump in the count (or increase) today. Whatever that means ...

Really? I heard they changed their methodology, but they now only count those who test positive and are also severely ill rather than just nucleic testing, but that was AM talk radio.

There was a corresponding increase in deaths, and I don't believe they changed the way they count dead people. It's just shenanigans.
