XS Racing AFM Round 2 Race Report
Buttonwillow Raceway
April 13-15th

XS Racing consists of Nick Lundquist (#768) and myself Robert Brittain (#823). We have been a team since 2016 and now going on our 3rd full year. This weekend didn’t go as planned…

We both do 5 races on Sunday; 750 SBK, 600 SBK, Formula 1, 600 SS and 750 SS.

This weekend our objective’s were slightly different. Nick has just came to Expert this year so he is focusing on speed and consistency and trying to make it up the grid as far as possible each round. He hasn’t quite got the goal in mind to finish on the podiums just yet. My goals have been the same since last year. Try to win the 750’s, podium Formula 1, and finish as high as possible in the 600 classes.

I had changed out on Friday my forks. I have Ohlins Gas Cartridges ive been riding since last year and I love them, but I was convinced to try the GP fronts. Lets just say after this weekend both the A bike and B Bike are getting them now! Thanks Berto, Chris, and Fuzzy for you help in getting these to me to try.

Saturday Practice: Since we didn’t have our main guy here this weekend, Will Morton, as he was helping Josh Herrin at Road Atlanta smoke everyone on his Street Bike R1S, we were left to fend for ourselves. Overall practice went okay. No bike problems but we didn’t break and land speed records. My fastest was a 1:53.4 and Nick’s was a 1:55.something.

Saturday Formula 1 Qualifying: I knew I had to get into the 50’s to get on the front row. That was a tall order considering I couldn’t break 1:53 in practice. None the less I got out as one of the first riders on track and did 6 hot laps, getting down to 1:51.7 (tied PR). This put me 5th position on the grid. I had used the Pirelli SC0 and I am now hooked. I will be using this tire moving forward when temps allow for qualifying and racing. Nick did a 1:54.5 and was 11th.

750 SBK Race: Fresh tires on and out for the warm up lap. I started 3rd and finished 2nd with a little help from Keir, as he took out a lapper going into turn 2 mid-way through the race. I had Ilya hot on my tail trying to take the position away, but I had some lappers help me fend him off on the final lap. Best time: 1:53.478.

600 SBK Race: I kept the same SC1 front and SC1 rear from race 1 on, which is pretty normal. I started 5th and got a great start up into 4th into turn 1. I knew Deion and Brandon would take off and leave everyone fighting for 3rd, so as I was right behind Steven Rue, I figured I would use him as my carrot and hold on as long as I could. On lap 3, Berto was stalking me and out-braked me into the AFM sweeper. I kept him behind me but I knew he was coming for me. The next lap I pushed and pushed to keep Rue in my sights, but he started to fade away in the distance. Berto though was trying to find a way to get by. I was holding him off. As I come out on to Riverside, I am playing over and over in my head “Brake later into AFM, Brake later into AFM…” As we approach Lost hills, I hit my break marker and turn in. This is where I tell you to keep your attention at the corner you are working on…. I got on the gas about a 1/2 second too early, spun the rear, and launched up over the handle bars. On the tumble down, Berto had to split me and the bike. I knew as I stopped I would have 35+ bike coming at me quick! I was over the hill in a blind area. I jump up and get off track just as freight train comes over the hill. I look at my bike and say “wow, barely and damage, I can fix this and we can race!” Then the pain sets in. I knew from my crash in 2016 just what this was. Collarbone. Day over.

The rest of the races I didn’t do. I nursed my broken collarbone for the rest of the day and rooted Nick on.

Nick did the rest of the races minus the 600 SS race as he was fighting bike heating issues. It never got into the danger zone, but it was running 220, which was hot for the conditions. He finished respectable Top 10’s all weekend. Will Morton will get this sorted out before next round. In the 750 SS race, Nick rode like a champ and scored his first podium in Expert with a 3rd place! Congrats to him and many more will come!

All in all, it was a fun weekend with a little mishap. I will have surgery tomorrow 4/25 to plate this one. I will now how both plated. I will be out for Round 3 as the bike is getting fixed up now and all will be good. Time to start fighting again for the speed and the top finishes. Next round we will have the AiM Data Logger on the bike so I’m excited to see the feedback from that. It will tell me how terrible I am!!

I can’t thank everyone enough who came by the pits to see how I was doing and for all the help loading up our stuff at the end of the weekend. We have a pretty big setup and it was a huge help. Ben, Kevin, Roger, Liz, Adam, Julia, Nick, and a couple of corner workers even came to pitch in!

Thank you to all of our sponsors as well! They make XS Racing work and we are getting bigger and stronger!

That pic with #57 leading is way cool.

Sorry about the broken collarbone!

Does anyone race with the collar-protectors that the motocrossers use?

Nice report Robert, hope you're feeling better quickly!

The air suits I think have proven to do a pretty good job on preventing/reducing the collarbone injuries/breaks. Made good use of mine the same weekend, judging by bike damage pretty similar crash as Robs (slower though I'm sure), and while my shoulder had a tender spot for a few days, I didn't even end up with a bruise there.
