Would you? I won't!

Would you leave your gear on your bike in a semi private parking garage?

By semi priviate I mean the following:
1. Parking is at a business
2. Must check in with security or have a card key to get into garage
3. Visitors and guests gain access through security
4. Garage has floors for visitors and guests to park as well as floors that require card key to access, therefore making these floors even more secure.

Note: MC parking is on the ground floor where visitors and guests can park.

Also, note that 99% of employees at this company have their own office. Office includes a locking door.

As in, I would rather ...
only place I leave my gear laying around is in my own garage. If I cant lock it to the bike, and wont be able to keep an eye on it, it comes with me.

I'm with Bill. Even if it's secured parking as in only one office has access to the garage. When it comes to my stuff in public, I'm pretty paranoid and rather not risk it.

I would not. But of course I also wear over $1K in gear when I go for a ride. That would be quite the painful experience to learn from.

And for some odd reason firefox is not letting me use single quotes. Hence the wonderfully spelled out contractions.

No, the gear goes with me, unless I am standing a few feet away from the bike (like having lunch at TOGOs or something like that.)

always bring it with me. Of course, thats coming from someone who locks their bike with 2 or 3 anti-theft devices when left out in public, especially over night. (disk lock, chain lock, alarm) (cuz im super paranoid about theft) :shhh

I park in an area that meets those criteria. The only thing I leave on the bike is my tankbag. Someone can steal it quite easily, but I trust the people who have access and my risk is somewhat lower than leaving a bunch of expensive gear.

In addition, _opportunity_ is a big motivator for crime. People who wouldn't think of stealing may be tempted when it is so easy.

No sense in tempting the weak with your expensive protective gear.

This is why they make hard bags. I stuff as much shit in there as I can (boots, pants, gloves, electric vest) and carry the rest with me (helmet and jacket).

someone will get wise to the fact eventually.

depends on where the place of office would be.
if it was SF, i'd take it all along with me; if it was some sleepy ass engineer eccentric town like palo alto or menlo park you'd prolly be ok.

I eat at the Togo's near Great America Pkwy and Bayfront (where 3Com used to be) all the time and I leave gear on my bike. Same thing when going to IN-N-OUT. No problems since I have lots of company doing the same.

In a garage when I am not close by? No way, Semi secured or not.

Great responses.

I see this every day and no one is watching closely.

I have seen some lock their helmets to their bikes, but many just hang the helment on the mirror and stuff their jacket under the windscreen. I have yet to see full leathers or a Aerostitch left on a bike. It is mostly helmets, gloves, and jackets.

The part that gets me it that these people have an office in which to put their gear. Why risk that some schmo may decide to grab your helmet while walking to his car in the middle of the day.

Maybe they know about cameras I don't, but I wouldn't want to go through the nightmare of trying to find the thief even if they are caught on camera.

I know which parking lot you're talking about PASTAPWR. ;)

I just recently started commuting back to work on the bike and had forgotten that some of the riders in the building do that. When I first pulled up to park and noticed that there was a jacket stuffed under the windshield and a helmet hanging off of the mirror, I looked around to see where the rider was. Nobody in sight.

This has been going on for a while though. I am noticing now though that that at least 2 or 3 people do this on a regular basis in the parking lot by leaving all of their gear right on the bike.

But just for the record, I bring all of my gear with me upstairs to the office. :D
