Why no AFM @ Laguna?

Just wondering why the AFM don't have a round at Laguna Seca. Is it because an AFM event is considered a "large" event and therefore not able to run cause of the 5 large event limits at Laguna? Or is it just much more expensive than the other tracks?

I'm hoping that someone here knows the answer or something that makes more sense than what I came up with.

I would be cool if they did do a round there and I'm sure this isn't the first time its been brought up.

Thanks!

First issue I'm guessing is cost. Laguna is ka-ching expensive.

Second issue is related to sound. The large event limits have a high decibil limit on sound approproaite for racing. The rest of the year they're limited to around 92 decibils like track days, and so unless we ran only production classes we wouldn't be under their sound limit.

There might be other reasons too.

Matt, thanks for your reply. I'm sure $$ has something to do with it, but is Laguna that much more expensive than Sears Point? I wonder....

I think you nailed it with the sound limits being a major reason. Even some of today's bikes with stock exhausts are hitting over 92db.

Even THill has a sound limit now. Its still high at 103db, but who knows what may happen. I can't see who would be complaining as there is only farmland and a pheasant hunting grounds nearby.

Its a shame that the oldest motorcycle road racing organization in the US is unable to run at one of the US most famous and prestigous tracks. :(

Them bastards!! Let's see: Move close to a popular track? Be in the flight-path for the ever huge Monterey Airport? Why move there?
Move to Salinas Valley or Spreckles for that matter...I'm glad that Wayne Rainey still lives there outside the track along with Doug Chandler from Salinas...Hopefully they have some influence..

I think sound has more to do with it, as AFM can afford to race there. Laguna can only run a certain amount of days over the 92db limit, and those days are all booked up for more major events.

Yup the sound....

THe noise Nazi's have Laguna strapped down...

SCRAMP has so many days to make money off the loud days and the AFM would not bring in the bling from fans...

I have heard that the AFM did have some races there way back in the day...anyone confirm that is true??

What pisses me off about this was when they built the track, there was no one there! Those fools built houses near a race track and complain that its noisy. Frick!:mad

Yes, it's true. Can't confirm dates here at work, but I believe there were 2 events at Laguna in the early 80's, years before the infield section was added for the USGP.

Simply put, at Laguna you pay to play. Quiet track days are expensive. Noisy ones ( they are limited to a few a year) are only affordable for WSB/AMA and so on.
