Why did this guy crash?

caption/comment on youtub says "bug flew into helmet" or similar. That's his explanation for getting into the dirt. However, why he tipped over from a little offroading is a little suspect, imo

Tough to say, but I'm going to go with weak counter-steering skills. In the previous curves it looked like he was running a little wide as well. A little pressure on the inside bar and the crash could have been avoided.

Panicked when he started getting wobbles. Didn't try to correct and/or inappropriate inputs to correct

Darkness!

Where's the kick starter?

Hmm. I think it it's pretty lame how everybody becomes a championship ring toting armchair quarterback...from the couch. Behind a keyboard. I'm not excluding myself, I'm just as guilty as the rest of you.

But. I'm bettin a lot of our own so called "expert" riders crashes look pretty stupid (and avoidable) too from someone else's armchair perspective. And now back to your normal mental programming...:ride

Looks to me like he got caught day dreaming and found himself in unfamiliar territory then panicked, ultimately giving up on the bike. The slow motion shots tell it all. The stretch that took him out was nothing more than the equivalent of a fire road, terrain that bike can easily handle at speed.
It's certainly not the first ADV bike/rider to shit and go blind at the first sign of dirt.
