Who is the largest gear shop in the Bay Area?

My son is a new rider and looking for some gear. He wants a leather jacket but hasn't had much luck in finding anything local. The CG in Santa Rosa use to have a good selection of leather jackets but now it's all Bilt & Sedici. He bought a pair of Bilt gloves and the gauntlet strap pulled off the first time he went to strap it. I had him return that crap and gave him a pair of my gloves to borrow until he finds something he likes. I was thinking we'd take a day to hit some of the larger stores. I was thinking about hitting the Daniese Store in SF to window shop, I think Daniese leather is out of his budget but would give him a good idea of how nice they are. Then hit up Scuderia West and maybe head down to Road Rider. I haven't been to Road Rider before, how is the selection, are they the largest A* dealer around? If you were doing a trip from the North Bay are those the stores you'd hit, any others worth checking out?

I would definately give Road Rider a visit. I haven't been there in a long time, but they used to be and probably still are the largest store around the Bay Area.

And for excellent gear, check out Helimot and Aerostich. Helimot is in San Jose. Though Aerostich is in Minnesota, I've gotten excellent service from them. And you can order more than one size, try them on, and then return what you don't want to keep and they're quick about crediting back on your card. Sure, you spend some shipping to send some stuff back, but in the long run, they're gear is worth it.

Yup, they still have a large range. Their prices are usually pretty competitive as well.

Scuderia - ask for Joanne or D-Store ask for Louda. Sometimes they have clearance or sale items - still expensive but maybe worth a shot to fit into his budget?

Don't skimp on the gear!

The largest gear store in the Bay Area is conglomeration of stores in a coupla block area in SF that includes Scuderia, CycleGear, the D store, SF Moto, the BMW dealer, etc., etc., etc. I generally stick to Scuderia (love, love, love them) or CycleGear (less so now that they have all that BILT stuff), but you can hit all of them in a row and get a really good sampling of all different brands and prices. The D store is right there, but Dainese never fits me and the D store stuff is expensive. But their clearance rack is definitely worth a driveby.

There are fewer and fewer well stocked stores because of selfish assholes that use them as a sizing service only to then scamper home and order online. :rolleyes

Mammoth Motorsports in Rohnert Park has a decent amount of gloves and other gear for its size. I usually try to find something I like and order through them, especially since they price match anything.

I know up here, we are kind of limited. Northbay Motorsports is a large shop, but their gear selection could be better. But hey, they can discount stuff.

Santa Rosa Powersports has a small selection along with G&B and Cycle West in Petaluma.

Only place that seems to have a decent selection of gear is Michael's....Harley Davidson in Cotati....if you need/want things all Harley in your life.

Then you have other shops like Santa Rosa Vee-twin, The Motorcycle Shop, etc that have SOME gear.

I'm sure any place can order what you need just make sure they have a good return/exchange policy.

As for using stores as a fitting service, that's on the stores for not being competitive or not willing to price match online. Yes, I get the idea of overhead, possible re-seller restrictions, and thin margins so let's not start there.

With shipping not always free and internet sales tax, doing that routine will reduce the idea of using stores as a fitting service and hopefully more people shop in store. I know I have recently. :teeth

Great, that's what I wanted to hear since it's the farthest store from us.

And for excellent gear, check out Helimot and Aerostich.

Thanks for posting these. I just bought a set of Helimot gloves for myself and can't wait to try them out. As for Aerostich, I've got one hanging in the closet, not really what he's looking for.

Thanks for pointing out how close these stores are. I've been to most of them individually and never knew how close they were to each other. Yeah, Scuderia rocks, I bought my custom Vanson suit through them.

Mammoth Motorsports in Rohnert Park has a decent amount of gloves and other gear for its size. I usually try to find something I like and order through them, especially since they price match anything.

Thanks, I sent him there and he said they didn't have much for leather jackets. I don't know if he looked at gloves while he was there or not. I love that store though and the woman who runs it is a doll. In fact I bought my current A* jacket from her several years ago.

Shopping at CG does not require that you buy Bilt gear. They also carry other quality brands.

You might be spoiled being that you're in SF. The Santa Rosa store only has 2 A* and 1 Dainese jackets in leather and of those they didn't have all the sizes we're looking at. There was no shortage of Bilt gear in that store.

This. I live a couple blocks away, but I always make the rounds when I'm shopping for new gear.

I make trips down to MotoStrano occasionally too, but usually shop them online and then go if there is anythign I want to check out in person or can;t find at another store closer.

Scuderia has a really nice selection of gear, and the D-Store is huge. Both carry good stuff that you'd feel confident with equipping your son. They are both in SF, just a short distance from each other, and both are staffed with kind knowledgeable people.
