Who are you thinking about, this Memorial Day weekend?

I love Da Whores
I had 5 Uncles serve during WWII.
My Uncle Bob McEntarfer was killed in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines.
He was injured in the previous battle. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts and the Silver Star, posthumously.
He is buried in a Military Cemetery near Manila
RIP Uncle Bob. :salute

I'm thinking I wish the sun would come out. Tired of this Seattle weather. Then I can grab a beer and reminisce.

I'm thankful for those that have done something I never wished they had to. Service for your country is very honorable. Dieing for it even more so. They make me proud to be an American.

i think about my cousin's husband, Tony. he served in the Vietnam War. every time i was invited to my cousin's house for Thanksgiving, he would always recall a story here and there. one thing i could tell was that he had survivor's remorse

though he nor my cousin are around any longer, i don't forget what it means to sacrifice ... the guys who were drafted for the Vietnam War did not come home to a warm welcome

I have a couple of Marine friends that will get a beer on me over the Holiday. One a Vietnam vet who has endured a dozen hand surgeries due to agent orange exposure (they believe).

His hands keep closing and they have to cut tendons and reattach to allow a better movement. He never get all of it... and laughs that his hands keep trying to close so they can hold a beer without any effort.

A little humor and a beer and a little Jack keeps him going.

My dad is a WWII vet. He just turned 92 :)

Wow! My dad was WWII. Grandpa was WWI and supposedly captured a dozen germans because his gun was the only one left with ammo. Dad was an army doctor who was sent to Japan after the bombing. He never talked about it but I look for him in the old footage.

We're supposed to honor the dead on Memorial Day, as opposed to Vet's Day, but I do not come from a military family on my Dads side as many were ancestral Quakers. My Spanish side were soldiers, but frontier soldiers and more like cowboys.

So I am thinking of my hero nephew, who is on fourth tour. He works on one of the medical recovery battalions or whatever is correct terminology, rescuing soldiers who have been wounded. I am beginning to think he is kind of addicted to that life because he was was home for almost two years, working as a Calfire guy, then decided to go back. I am concerned about him, yet I admire him for being the hero of the family.

To willingly go back in a role specifically meant to save others... that is pretty fucking cool.

Was in New Orleans for the weekend. Went to the WWII Museum. My Grandpas fought in the Battle of Okinawa. It was pretty inspiring to read about it and there and see many of the artifacts on display I have of his. His springfield 03A3 rifle, the Japanese army sword he somehow got, purple hearts and bronze star.
