While We're all Sitting Around, Can I Have Your Input on my Next Bike?

Starting with a bit of me as a motorcyclist.
- 6 years of riding - not too far away from 100k total miles
- Currently riding a '15 FZ09 with full Penske suspension, full Yoshi exhaust, aftermarket QS, aftermarket ECU flash and I've put over 40k miles on it.
- Electronics are nice but don't sway my purchasing.
- I prefer to do my own maintenance, and I learned how to do valve adjustments on the FZ.
- Most weekend riding I do is hammy, 9, 84, and all the goat roads in between.
- I share lanes during the week - no wind protection needed.
- The power (105 HP) on the FZ is just perfect for street. I will never say "no" to more torque (61 ft-lb).
- I have direct riding experience with, Tuono, Panigale, CBR600RR, Superduke, Street Triple R, 821, 390, ducati scrambler, R1, 790, Thruxton R, Hyperstrada, Multistrada, fz07.

The twitchy throttle response on the FZ09 is a great excuse for me to dream about other used bikes. I'd like to grab a second bike that will satisfy my "cruising" when I'm not trying to ride over 8/10ths. My current list is as follows. I'd probably have a budget of $8k (for something like an RS/CB1000R/821) so some of these might need more time before I see that price on the used market.

Again, the use case for a second bike is one that has a smooth throttle and enjoyable to ride casually without having to dip too far into speeding ticket territory. Thoughts?

[Peak torque - Bike]
53 - Vitpilen 701
53 - Svartpilen 701
54 - 701 Supermoto 2017+
54 - 690SMC 2019+
82 - FZ10 MT10
75 - Thruxton R
77 - Bonnie T120
50 - XSR700
25 - DRZ400SM
63 - Monster 821 2018+
65 - CB1100 2014+
76 - CB1000R 2017+
73 - Street Triple RS

Sounds like you just want a better FZ09. Which, if you kept your current bike and got another very similar, would be very boring. Get something different and branch out, or sell the FZ and upgrade.

Fix that twitchy throttle using your preference to do your own maintenance and then buy a Grom.

Edit: I'd say get a the DRZ and put a carb on it. Stupid cheap fun.

Go with one of the first four on your list, a 701 or 690. Might as well try something different than what you already have. You might like those better on your favorite twisty roads.

He said smooth, so I was surprised to see all the thumpers on the list.

If the bigger the thumper, the bigger the thump applies to the Huskys, might be worth trying the Svartpilen 401 along with the 701. Cheaper, slower, and probably smoother. Might meet his needs.

I normally ride a Honda XR650L thumper and it's smoother than some four cylinder bikes. Definitely smoother than my KTM 990 Adv V-twin was. Balance shafts do wonders for engine smoothness.

Yea, and if I ended up with a Street Triple RS I'd definitely ditch the Fz09

My friend just picked up a 701 and hopefully I'll get to give it a go soon.

If you want to cruise around and not speed, I see this scrambler in the classifieds. They feel like they were made for that.

That thing looks great. I'll have to read up on it.

I should have specified with the term "throttle" smoothness. Is it possible for singles to have smooth throttle application? I haven't spent much time on them.

Sure.
There are (after market) throttle assemblies that allow you to chose fast (short) or slow (long) cams to set the throttle how you like it.
You want smooth, go with bigger cam and probably 1/2 turn.
You want quick go with small cam and 1/4 turn.
Tougher to be smooth with the quicker throttle. But practice will get you near.

I'm guessing the problem that you have now is at small throttle openings, like from zero to 1/8 or something. When I had the 1997 Ducati M900 Monster, it was like that until I opened up the throttle mixture screws on the carburetor another quarter turn. My fuel injected 2008 KTM 990 Adv got that way a couple of thousand miles after each service. It was so bad that I developed a new habit of slipping the clutch at slow speeds for small throttle openings. A different throttle cam didn't really help that at all.

My XR650L is smooth at small throttle openings because the carburetor is dialed in properly. But if you're ham-fisted with it and grab a bunch of throttle at low speeds in first gear it will still take off quickly, put the front wheel in the air and possibly dump you onto your butt if you're not paying attention.

So yeah, it's possible for a thumper to have smooth throttle application.

Which aftermarket ECU reflash did you use for the FZ09? The throttle is still twitchy after that? Many People who've done VCyclenut ECU reflash say it's very good. After living with two 2000s KTMs (SuperDuke 990 and 690SM) with twitchy throttle (great otherwise), I really appreciate bikes with smooth on/off fueling. A KTM 1190 I rented for a day had excellent throttle response so hopefully KTM had it figured out.

You seem to be looking for a late model, but this '13 Multistrada GT is the best deal I've seen in a long time if the bike is indeed clean. If I didn't already have one, I'd jump on this one.

Thats the one! It is a good flash and the quick shifter timing he set up is better than any OEM panigale or Factory Tuono I've tried. The bike was really difficult to ride before the flash.

The 701 supermoto is quite fun. Not a pure supermoto but not a streetbike either. I love mine. Comfortable easy to ride. When I ride my wife's Z900 I want to go 100mph the whole time, on the 701 usually 75 ish is the sweet spot.

Two bikes I thought about after the 701 are the 950SP Hypermotard and the ktm 790 supermoto (whenever that happens. I dont want to go back to normal suspension after riding long travel but would like a little more umph than the 701 offers. I could see going back to a 690 or 701 if I dont enjoy the bigger bikes.

A car in space...hmmmm.
Theres no way I'd go from the FZ09's triple back to a single lol. Slap a power commander on that puppy and sort out the suspension then get a DRZ for shits and giggles :thumbup
