Where can I get my cylinder hone?

I just bought a 2004 kx 65 and the top end pretty bad. I need a shop to hone the the cylinder and resurface the head and provide a new piston. Any shop in the east bay that does this?

Tech Machine can do all of the machining. IDK if they would be willing to source the piston as well, but it never hurts to ask. They primarily do automotive rebuilds. They always do great work and helped me build some really fast Nissans. They have love for the machines and understand that we do as well...

You might want to confirm, but I am 99% sure your cylinder on the KX65 is plated. Generally, if a plated cylinder is worn or damaged enough to need honing it is usually replated. Millenium or US Chrome will be source. Nothing local.

I had a cylinder done by US Chrome recently, they give an AMA member discount and were quick on the turnaround.

absolutely right. I forgot mine's plated too...

Millennium is the place to go; they have a great reputation nationwide. :thumbup

Lansleeve plated my CR’s cylinder, I havent had an issue yet. They can set you up with a piston too if you like.

FYI, Millenium has had some bad feedback lately. I’d read up before anyone considers them for any work.

Doesn't Eric Gorr work at Millenium now? He always had some bad feedback. He has the skill for sure, but he's terrible at doing anything quickly. I used him for a 295 kit on the old yz, but wasn't in a hurry and knew what I was getting into. For just a simple re-plate, I'd probably try US Chrome.

You mean sleeved it Mark, dont you? Its always an option. Plating them last longer and more top ends. Given the choice I would always choose plating.

Gorr worked for/with them doing porting and big bore stuff. Nothing to do with the plating business. Even so, I think that association was over a number of years ago. Heard some of the same stories about him.

Edit: yep. He moved over to US Chrome's address in Fond Du Lac WI, about 40 minutes away from Millenium's shop according to the address on his website.:laughing

These are the only options I know of for plating

  • Millenium
  • Power Seal
  • US Chrome

AFAIK, anybody else who does plating sends it to these guys. Internet research will find good and bad stories from all of them. :dunno

I think it helps to have a tuner who can do a final clean up of port edges when the cylinder gets back from replating.

I agree with you CJ. LA Sleeve repairs and replates cylinders too. I had a nick in the cylinder wall so they welded, bored, and replated the cylinder back to OEM specs. I had 30 minutes on the motor before I raced the last harescramble at hollister and gave it hell. No problems

I personally would stay away from sleeving. The heat transfer with a steel sleeve isn't as good and may pose a problem in hotter weather. Porting might be affected too. I'm probably over thinking this though.
