What was the name of that dealership?

Maybe 15 years ago all the California motorcycle dealers got an end run by a shop down near Inglewood- who created an online presence of best pricing, in stock, deals all done online- come in/sign/ride it home. They grew to a couple more locations, I want to say they bought a dealer out in Oakland or Emeryville. They were going gangbusters for a couple years.

Over time, it faded and closed. Just can't remember what the name was. Anybody? Thx.

I want to say OTD motorsports or something like that? I think they closed 10 years ago or so.

Crazy how many motorbike shops have closed in the bay area. I did a search for my nearest Yamaha dealer and the closest one is in Hayward.

Yeap I passed on OTD to buy a bike at a local dealer (the whole establish a relationship thing) and they folded within a couple of years. :laughing

Must be a rough business to be in.

The '08 to '11 crash took out a lot of moto shops. Shops that had strong followings and good customer rapport. Really did major damage to the moto industry in the US.

I know Im bringing general topics into KS, but anyone got the lowdown on SF Moto? They seem to be the only kawi dealer here in SF.

At least you can find dealers for all of the brands somewhere not too far away. There are zero dealers selling any Italian brands in the entire state that I live in now.

I used OTD’s quote to get a good deal on a brand new K7 GSXR600 from Marin Cycleworks. Marin Cycleworks folded about a year later.

I would love to get a behind-the-scenes retro writeup on OTD motorcycles (wasn't it OTD cycles or OTD cyclesports? or something?) and find out exactly how they did business.

I remember my early days of SBR back in 06-08 and hearing about OTD bikes coming to Evolution / AlanRider7 and bolts / chains / etc being loose and unsafe - but they were brand new crate bikes hastily assembled and sold, AFAICT. Never knew anyone firsthand who bought from them but several here and on SBR did.
Mostly they were a great way to negotiate a lower price from the sunnyvale dealers.

I always thought that it was nigh impossible to sell motos without being a full-fledged dealer w/ warranty support, fully stocked parts counter, etc - I know Triumph and BMW (at least) required their dealers to have a certain amount of floor models available and a certain dollar amount of parts/accessories on premise - I think that's part of why CalMoto stopped selling Triumph? Wasn't worth paying for all the inventory when sales were slow, or something.

So yeah, I'd love to hear how they were able to sell brand-new bikes for so cheap and carry so many brands without being an "official" dealer franchise - money laundering? Under-the-table crate sales? Ways to move old product quickly? AFAICT they had late-model / current motos at the height of their business..

I bought a new 600rr from OTD Cyclesports back in 2007. Great business as far as price goes. I called them and confirmed the otd quote over the phone I came in with cash and left minuets later. It was more like a large warehouse with very few sales people. Very easy to deal with and didn't try to up sell me on any extras.

where is AlanRider7?

No idea. Last I heard he closed up shop years ago - either fed up with motos, the moto community, or he got collected in the industry downturn in 2010-2011? I had never been to his shop but think I met him once at an SBR thing - he helped a friend of mine with some maintenance stuff and adjustments on his first motorcycle, free of charge. Very nice guy.
