The Strange Relationship Between Global Warming Denial and ... Speaking English

One possible answer is that it's all about the political ideologies prevalent in these four countries.

The US climate change counter movement is comprised of 91 separate organizations, with annual funding, collectively, of "just over $900 million." And they all speak English.

"I do not find these results surprising," says Riley Dunlap, a sociologist at Oklahoma State University who has extensively studied the climate denial movement. "It's the countries where neo-liberalism is most hegemonic and with strong neo-liberal regimes (both in power and lurking on the sidelines to retake power) that have bred the most active denial campaigns—US, UK, Australia and now Canada. And the messages employed by these campaigns filter via the media and political elites to the public, especially the ideologically receptive portions." (Neoliberalism is an economic philosophy centered on the importance of free markets and broadly opposed to big government interventions.)

I have a friend who works in China off and on. She's an engineer (and racer) who visits one industrial city regularly. She says you can't see the top of the skyscrapers on a typical day. China may be #1 on the list, but they manage to pump more crap into the air than any other country. almost by a factor of two.

And yeah, global warming is something to worry about.

There's a difference between pollution and AGW.

Pollution is real and we control it.

AGW... jury is out on what we have to do with it IMO.

AGW... jury is out on what we have to do with it IMO whether it exists.

FTFY. If AGW exists, then we have everything to do with it, by definition. If it doesn't exist, then we have nothing to do with it, again by definition. And whether or not AGW exists is independent of GW/climate change in general.

Pollution and CO2 production are usually the same thing. We don't control pollution. I don't what you mean by this. The amount of crap dumped into the land, sea and air yearly is literally unbelievable.

id love to see anyone find more than one scientific paper supporting the idea that the current GW trend is not a product of human beings.

whats the recent statistic now... 95% of the scientific community agrees that current GW is our fault. there is no jury on this matter. everyone needs to defer to the consensus of experts so we can stop wasting time not doing anything. and so we can stop looking like idiots across the globe :laughing

This.

I mean, unless youre republican. Then of course "not all the facts are in" on global warming. Its fuckin 2014, n we are overloaded with scientific proof in our laps, but yet we still have dumbasses scratchin their nuttz talkin bout theres nothin definitive out there.

Yea, cool story ya doorknob.:rolleyes

Come New Years 2015, California Cap and Trade begins. Gallon of gas immediately goes up 15-40 cents a gallon. Other energy usage, electrical and natural gas will also be subject to CO2 credit taxation. Not only can you believe in GW you can now start paying for it. Thanks Arny

UNO is the tax on energy is a behavior changing tax kind.

Good, we should be seeing the true cost of our activities and adjust them accordingly.

Remember how little traffic there was when gas first shot up to $4/gallon. It was great, so many cars off the road and much better for the air.

Coworker was telling me about a buddy of his that married a chinese girl. She moved to Canada with said coworkers buddy and was taking pictures of the sky (because it's blue). Sent said pictures back home to her parents who called her a liar and accused her of editing the photos.

No idea if the story is true or not, but if that's really how bad and how long it's been bad in some parts of China, that's quite sad.

Is the study asking about the human impact on the planet, or whether or not temperatures are rising, or are they just being asked if they believe in global warming and they're answering based on whatever they think that means? Temperatures have been on an upwards trend since 1900, after a down trend that continued through the industrial revolution.

Wazz I see it differently. :D imagine the billions of new money.
I want to find out how to get into the CO2 credit racket. Sounds easily corruptible with money transferring between so many hands. Bet it turns out like one of CA cigarette taxes. A billion dollars collected annually and only a few hundred thousand making it to Children programs. The benefactor that was said the moneys would be used for to sell the ballot measure.

15 cents a gallon for CO2
