Pretty much all the weather this year will be El Nino. Although they have downplayed how big they said it was going to be lately.

In SF we got like 36 hours of straight rain.

I'd say we had some good rain yesterday. I drove from San Jose home to Chico and it rained the entire way

It was an atmospheric river event that is typically attributed with El Niño but it is not El Niño by itself. El Niño is an index created by abnormal sea surface temperature and other factors. It is used generally to predict a year of heavy rain.

No. This system came from the North. El Nino arrives in a few weeks then it will be 1997 all over again :banana

Whoops misspoke, the synoptic system came for the northwest. The typical storms from El Niño will be atmospheric river events and we will see majority of them in January.

The classic effect should begin in January. I remember previous El Nino years. They are warm storms. This one was a little cold. I think it was 1982 when it started raining on New Year's Day, then rained at least some for every day into late February. Amazing. I remember pix of the flooded lots at Candlestick because those were football years.

It just always felt warm. I remember sweating in my rain parka.

But you can already tell something is afoot. Quite often we don't get much rain in December. Often its clear and very cold through the latter part of the month.

The latest reports I'd heard (maybe four days ago) were that they now think the year may be an all time record breaker. We'll see.

This.

So who's going to be riding through these actual El Nino storms? The last two days weren't that bad, and I'm planning on riding through all the upcoming rains as long as roads don't flood.

I just need to clear out the garage to keep the FJ dry and hopefully flood-free during all these storms.

I'll be riding through the three months of craziness. I think the single scariest thing I can remember from 97' was the unexpected flooding and how easy it is to fall at spotting still water on the road.

The FJR has been collecting dust for a few weeks now. First it got too cold (for me) then the rains started. Up here we have mini rock slides over some of the mountain roads and the Navarro river has overflowed its banks and closed highway 128 out by the coast. The big worry is mud slides in the Lake County burn areas (as if they didn't have enough to contend with already).

I don't mind the rain, I just don't like the heavy winds associated with last night's and the night before. It makes it kinda hard to :ride

I've been riding a lot in the rain lately. Been focusing on my smoothness :thumbup

I know the scientific explanation for rain, but it always amazes me. Water, falling out of the fucking sky!!!! Come on.....wow.

I commuted from Fremont to Redwood City over the Dumbarton in '97. One morning during the storms I started in the right hand side of the right hand lane on the Fremont side of the bridge. By the time I got to the other side of the bridge the wind had blown me to the left hand side of the left hand lane. And there was nothing I could do to stop it from happening. It was one long pucker event.
