I can't help but feel like using a civilian vehicle as cover was a really bad move on the cops part...

Doesn't SWAT exist for a reason beyond busting people for weed? What happened to negotiations and rooftop snipers and helicopters?

What a shame, poor UPS driver/bystander and their families.

EDIT:

I don't mean to armchair but, I'm pretty sure that's not how you do hostage situations...

Also if my car had a bullet hole from that mess I'd be suing the piss out of the department for everything I could.

Seems like armed gunmen shooting at whatever they thought was a cop is a shitty situation. Could have gotten worse if they got out on foot and got into a building or bus. Which creates more hostages while the police sit idle and wait for SWAT to gear up and show up an hour later.

This situation was handled so poorly, bunch of goddamn cowboys rolling in guns blazing trying to live out their Sicario freeway fantasy. What the fuck where they thinking? Mag dumping into a vehicle with a hostage in rush hour traffic! Now we have two innocent people dead.

These patrol guys are not trained to handle situations like this and it shows. Stay back, control the situation and let Swat handle it. This could have ended with no loss of life.

One bozo firing in at cops in a public space is not the same as 20 cops unloading at a vehicle in a public space...

I saw this same goddamn shit happen in person on I80 in Emeryville 2 years ago https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/09...-80-shootout-with-police-was-san-leandro-man/

The cops even shot first, which is some bullshit.

That didn't have to happen on a crowded freeway, helicopters exist... follow the guy... we have the fuckin technology to not have a shootout on a freeway. It's all this macho cop cowboy bullshit that makes these guys make terrible decisions.

Ya, the legal immunity thing is really ridiculous. Felt the same way about that hostage the cops killed in that car in merced or Bakersfield or whatever central CA town that was.

is insensitive

That is a bad deal all around. Damn shame that it happened. You never know how you will react in the shit until it starts flying at you. I won't pretend I would have handled it better.

Damn shame for the loss of people and the trainwreck in the press the aftermath is going to be.

I have seen a bunch of YT videos where guys are pulled over for some traffic infraction, in a a non US Country, and they state to the officer; "I'm reaching for my wallet and registration", and the officer replies: "Don't Worry- we are not like the Cops in the US-we won't shoot you".
