two stroke service

Hey all. I'm working on picking up a 77 Rd400. It runs but likely needs some tuning. Can anyone suggest a good shop or mechanic I can take it to for general service and possible future performance improvements. I'm in Richmond. Someone close would be nice but I can trailer it wherever it needs to go. Thanks

Carlos Neves in South San Francisco has done great work on my 2Ts.

I tried to get in touch with Carlos last year to work on my RD400. I'm under the impression that he doesn't have a shop anymore. Might be working out of his house? Good luck getting in touch- he's super-hard to communicate with. Not good at replying to questions at all.

When you are ready to do more performance based work (porting, custom built expansion chambers, head mods, crank re-building, etc) I'd recommend Brian Turfrey. He's one of the best 2-stroke tuners in the world and only about a 2 hour drive from the bay area.

Here's an example of Brian's pipe work...

If you don't know the bike's history, pull off the heads to see how the barrels look. If the walls are scored you'll be wasting your time until you get that fixed.

If you're handy with 4t bikes doing some of the basics is pretty simple and fun. Good luck and post up some pics!

Do you have his contact info to share? My dad has been on a 2-stroke rampage the last few years. He had a guy who was supposed to be working up his Kawasaki 500 engine and I guess the job never got finished. He's been talking about these bikes my whole life and I just want him to get his on the road. He's extremely handy but the deep dive engine work he has been outsourcing.

Unfortunately he doesn't advertise and doesn't have a website (he has so much work he doesn't need to). So he only takes work by individual referral. Send my a PM or email and I'll get Brian's info to you.

Might wanna call John Tippin @RDsonly in Texas now. He did alot of work on my 400' He's closing shop this year, but he has everything, a wealth of knowledge and probably still has ties in the bay area. He's also a great guy. Look him up or call him(512)718-9570 His website shows him starting his RZ 500, running perfect

Not many great 2 stroke tuners still practicing their craft. I heard that Ron Black (RB Designs) has recently retired and is only doing an occasional carb mod. Scott Clough has had some health problems in the past. He's still working, but not sure how much longer. Brian Turfrey keeps threatening to move back to New Zealand. Rick Lance passed away a year ago. Ed Toomey has come out of retirement, but who knows for how long. And who knows how much longer Stuart Toomey will keep his business open. A bygone era for sure.

Thanks again for the leads. Here's my dad's 500 all cleaned up and assembled (doesn't start, though)

You can contact Chuck Quenzler. He’s in Florida but he’s a 2x Daytona winner and has built 2stroke engines for many other race winners. He also builds street engines tuned as high strung (or bone stock) as the customer desires. And he’s a good guy to boot. Not the usual mad scientist diva type.
Reach out and see if he can help.
