Possibly the best view from a campsite in this part of Cali.

absolutely stunning. Is that one of the campsites up there or did you just find a spot?

It's dispersed camping in this area. This is probably the most prominent/well-known site but there's a lot more sites within slingshot distance that are probably even better.

Lots of questions.

1. Is it free?
2. Do I have to book in advance?
3. Campfires allowed? If so, what kind?
4. Bathrooms?

1. Si
2. No booking, but I would avoid weekends...
3. Da (when I was there), but check fire restrictions when you plan on being there. Also permit required, which can be obtained online at http://www.preventwildfireca.org/Campfire-Permit/
4. Nein.

Edit: I should add that it's a pretty rough dirt road once you turn off Nacimiento-Ferguson. You don't need a 4x4 but I would definitely recommend something with high ground clearance and good suspension. Not a hard trail but definitely requires some line-picking and it had me wishing I aired down my tires for a less bumpy ride.

I've got ground clearance and decent suspension, but my truck is stupidly long (crew cab, long bed). Is the length going to give me issues picking lines? Thanks.

Nah you're good. My Tacoma is a DCLB. My next door neighbor at camp that night brought his F-250 out there.

Here's his pictures from the weekend "expeditionxoffroad" on Instagram.

No, it is mostly fire road after you leave the pavement. Took my Tundra up there it is a drive. Saw the coast for less than a minute then wind and fog. Turned cold and the wife said let's go down the hill and camp by the ocean.

Friends camper and the spot I was headed for.

If it a fairly wide trail? I don't feel like putting scratches down the side of my new ram 2500.

LoL, I see the new pics with small cars in the background and update. Maybe I need a cheaper truck....... newer $70k trucks are allergic to real off roading.

Note to everyone camping. There have been two recent and very serious forest fires in Big Sur, both due to campfires.
Please check about campfires before you light one.

MOST AREAS in Big Sur specifically prohibit campfires.

In a few they are ok in the rainy season. This has not been a very good rainy season. Be careful, really really careful.
