I don't disagree. It's part of a larger cultural shift. When I grew up, I remember that mechanical skill was just something that many boys picked up from their fathers. Not trying to be sexist. It's just the way things were back then. Most everyone I knew wrenched their own cars and bikes. Now the kids are stuck in front of a screen. They may not even have a present father.

Every high school had auto shop, wood shop, and metal shop. Skilled professions were respected.

There are still a lot of highly skilled mechanics. You see them in the tuner community. But they make their money doing other things.

To give you an idea of the generational shift, one of my roommates, who is a millennial, was looking for the "plant scissors" the other day. I was like "dude, they are called 'pruners.'"

For some insight into what you're describing and the current attitude that one must get a college degree, I highly recommend this book. An excellent read.

Nice! I read what people were saying about it, and went ahead and got it. I liked this:

""Crawford reveals the satisfactions of the active craftsman who cultivates his own judgment, rather than being a passive consumer subject to manipulated fantasies of individuality and creativity.

"-Nathan Tarcov, Committee on Social Thought, University of Chicago"

Can't wait to listen, based on the above - wondering if he will talk about Baudrillard's concept of hyperreality. My thing, and I am totally not a philosopher, is that people are disconnected from tangible reality now. Everything that many people experience is mediated. Even when people go out into nature, a lot of them do it "for the gram," and spend more time thinking about their followers than smelling the trees.

I pretty much do Almost everything in life by myself for all of the above sound and good reasoning.

Intuition and old school is everything to me. But When it comes to modern day bike mechanics (and electrical stuff ), there are enough super -talented “ non mechanics “ on Barf to guide me through:). It really is the Best of Barf.

But....if one is the jack of all trades, one is the master of none and this KTM needs a master specialist !!!! That’s what my intuition and 2 wasted months of rabbit holes tells me. :laughing

Appointment at Mach 1 is booked for next week ! Stay tuned !

Sweet! Agreed on seeking masters. As you know that's true wisdom.

MACH 1 UPDATE!!!!

So quick recap :
After DMS installed the Rottweiler and still no start up, lug lug lug lug , off it went to Mach 1.
They found immediately that a fuel line wasn’t hooked up and also that one of the injector wires was off and hadn’t been reconnected after the PC 5 was removed.
So bike is running again but in their words .....
“ We got your bike running again , albeit poorly “.

That’s a huge concern though as the bike wasn’t really running poorly except for the stalling issue.
They are focusing on the Main sensor ,micro filter screen checks , and to see if the K&N filter was possibly overoiled.
They did a very thorough mechanical And service history check to try to pinpoint the problem and in doing so we found that DMS had only actually changed oil and spark plugs .... no real tune up was done. So valve clearance and throttle adjustment are also on the checklist along with a code search. Haven’t heard anything beyond the initial restart.

Wow, fuel line and wire not connected? Hard to find words. Looks like there are a few backyard shops out there not worth your time and money spent.

Exactly

Luckily Mach 1 is first class for KTMs.

NEW DIAGNOSIS: Oxygen Sensor

Who guessed that one ? It was one of the first theories. And it makes perfect logical sense for the original problem.
A $165 fix and yet so far I have spent over $1450 going down the wrong rabbit holes. Gah!

Wow, that's remarkable.

Did they say if it was an in-tank or outside-of-tank fuel line? Those in-tank fuel lines are tricky.

But the wire to the injector, that's pretty inexcusable.

Now we know why cars have on-board diagnostics.

:wave

Forget that! When my Nissan had an intermittent fault in one of the ignition coils the code showed "catalytic converter inefficient". The stealer-ship wanted to replace the catalytic converter for $1600. When it finally got worse and started misfiring my independent mechanic was able to read out which cylinder and replace the coil, to the tune of ~$150 for parts and labor.

I wouldn't call victory just yet. I would ride the bike for a few hours to make sure the problem is really solved and not just hidden.

Glad to hear you are making some progress with your new to you bike. Definitely the right call to get it to KTM dealer/specialist. No doubt Mach 1 will eventually sort this out for you.

Bikes are getting nothing but more complicated, definitely harder to service for non specialists without some experience (like us shade tree mechanics), and possibly less reliable due to it. But there is no turning back the clock, it is what it is.

I'll be joining the KTM/Husqvarna fold with a new to me 350 or 500 dualsport within the year. I'm going down kicking, but don't have a choice and will certainly have to learn some new skills to keep them running on the trail. :x

Good luck and I'm going keep following.:thumbup

UPDATE!!!

After 3 months at Mach 1 . They could not resolve my problem.
$750 bill to discover that the other shop had screwed the bike up some.

They ordered an oxygen sensor ( which took two months due to back orders), but didn't install it.
Time to pull out the big guns. I took the bike home and made a call then a 12 hour drive south.

The big guns is my former jet ski race mechanic and die hard KTM dirt bike fanatic down in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
Eric is going to lean on another certified KTM mechanic and his plan is to install the oxygen sensor , remove the K&N filter and replace with the stock air filter, drain the tank , check the throttle body sensor then hand it to the KTM guy to do a live ride with a computer backpack to get real time data. *****That's IF the bike runs again after the initial changes mentioned.
When I got the bike back from Mach 1 it started but sounded like it had an advanced flu...sounded sick in a bad way ; A definite set back from the bike I started with so hoping ERIC can pull this off and get the bike back to what a KTM 690 should be!
Stay tuned.

Hello. Any update on this?

Hello. Any update on this?

+1, dying to know what the final issue turns out to be!

These 690's sure seem to run the gamut. I know folks with low mileage engines toasted, know of folks converting to carbs to solve fueling problems, and many others who go 40k miles with few if any problems. Its all over the place. Really surprised Mach1 couldn't solve it.

Did Mach1 give up or was it a matter of an unwillingness to spend anymore money to try and diagnose it? Not a judgement, just curiosity. :thumbup
