The light works fine, but some lights in fairfield wont register a bike cuz it doesnt weigh enough to make the sensor go off. Otherwise the lights work fine. I asked this question in traffic school 15 years ago and the teacher said to just go anyway. But he wouldnt answer me on what the legal answer is.
Svclee is correct. The signals do not function by weight. it's the "metal" in the car that changes the "Coil" in the street.
TRUE crime would depend on the officer. I've heard rumors from "after 3 minutes" "3 light cycles" etc. the answer is A red light is STILL a red light. Now there are things you can do to help yourself.
Sometimes : Putting your kickstand down over the "cut" in the asphalt killing the bike, and hitting the starter to restart the bike will trip a light.
Correct thing to do : Write a letter to the city's roads and traffic department to notify/complain about "problem intersections". Use the statement of "hand fatigue can sometime force a ridder to let go of the brake, thus diming the rear brake light to a running light. Putting us at greater risk of not being seen. The lights length is too long for us to safely sit at".
I've heard that works well if you can add some other people sending in the same complaint.
