traffic lights

So if you get a street light in the left turn lane. and the sensor doesnt recognize that you are even at that light. What are you legally allowed to do. Can you run the light if it never turns green? Or are you suppose to just sit there and hope that a car eventually comes. I know what I do, I am wondering what is legal

you have to wait till a car comes. red light is still a red light. if it doesnt turn red i usually turn right and try another way..i choose the alternative to that if i "know" no one is around. =)

and the answer was that if the light is malfunctioning you can go when it's safe. look up the vehicle code.

The light works fine, but some lights in fairfield wont register a bike cuz it doesnt weigh enough to make the sensor go off. Otherwise the lights work fine. I asked this question in traffic school 15 years ago and the teacher said to just go anyway. But he wouldnt answer me on what the legal answer is.

I agree that it is the sensor, but it needs a certain amount of weight to tell that someone is in the lane.

Svclee is correct. The signals do not function by weight. it's the "metal" in the car that changes the "Coil" in the street.

TRUE crime would depend on the officer. I've heard rumors from "after 3 minutes" "3 light cycles" etc. the answer is A red light is STILL a red light. Now there are things you can do to help yourself.

Sometimes : Putting your kickstand down over the "cut" in the asphalt killing the bike, and hitting the starter to restart the bike will trip a light.

Correct thing to do : Write a letter to the city's roads and traffic department to notify/complain about "problem intersections". Use the statement of "hand fatigue can sometime force a ridder to let go of the brake, thus diming the rear brake light to a running light. Putting us at greater risk of not being seen. The lights length is too long for us to safely sit at".

I've heard that works well if you can add some other people sending in the same complaint.

FYI a lot of the new intersections have a new system that uses a camera. As vehicles come into the view of the camera screen the computer counts changed pixels. The city engineer determines roughly how many pixels must be filled to cycle the lights. Usually this is done manually by observing the traffic back-up during high traffic periods. What is awesome about this system is if you flash your high beam from far enough back it lights all of the pixels, the computer thinks there is a line of cars and wham, you get a green. While on patrol my guys know to hit it with the vehicle spot from a block back and it will go green before you hit the intersection. You can easily spot the cameras. They are mounted with the lens directly at the lane it controls.. Hope this helps!! Just try not to wheelie your headlight at the camera like your truly..

Nope. You;d have to LEAVE your highbeam on from a really far distance. The camera notices a change for a period of time. not instant. Also "flashes" are reduced at night.

If the signal isn't changing, then it's malfunctioning. Just because it's not malfunctioning for cars doesn't mean it isn't.
21800 (d) (1) The driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection which has official traffic control signals that are inoperative shall stop at the intersection, and may proceed with caution when it is safe to do so.
Those cut out areas are indeed inductor loops for the signals.
Some areas use cameras. Some of those are just red light cameras. :D The newer cameras actually can pick out shapes pretty well - well enough to pick up bicycles - so leaving the headlights on, if it works, that camera sucks or you're just lucky. :D
I've had some rad cops come set them off for me in cruisers before. Those guys would get super mojo'd from me.
