Cycle Gear had the one I wanted in stock, which had three zipper pockets on the sides and a big expandable center section with a moveable divider inside. It's made by Sedici. I've had it for nearly a year now with no issues.
I decided to go aluminium, ya they cost a lot. Basic reasoning is I can lock it while traveling. Same as some of my mesh gear(Klim), I just started watching Ebay, found what I was looking for and bought lightly used for half the price of new.
Don't discount used, hard or soft cases. There are lots out there bought for one big dream trip then sold.
What's your definition of "an arm and a leg"? If there's one thing I've learned over the years it's that trying to skimp out on motorcycle gear usually doesn't work out too well.
A few questions:
1) Is the ability to lock your gear up important?
2) Is waterproofing important?
3) How much stuff do you think you'll regularly carry?
I have hard cases on my Trophy but I got them at the time of purchase with a promotion so no extra cost. I like hard cases for the security...I'm able to leave stuff in there and lock it up and it discourages the casual thieves.
For my new SR/F, I bought Kriega Drypacks (10 liter and 20 liter bags) for ease of mounting to the rear and the ability to attach the 10 liter to the 20 liter if I need extra space.
Unfortunately, without knowing the range you're comfortable with, it's hard to make a decent recommendation.
Personally I like the Kriega stuff if I don't want to spend the cash on hard cases but even the Kriega bags run $100-$160 depending on size.
