Toe's R6 race bike build

Well... Been riding about 10 years now, been doing track days for about 5 years. decided I want to give racing a shot.

I owned a R6 before and I made it into the Fail bike, which some of you may have seen before in Super Street Bike, or on the forums.

Ive been working for Catalyst Reaction Suspension Tuning for the past year now, we had a 06 R6 in the back with somewhere around 30k on it. the bike had never been crashed but the motor needed to be freshened up and the bike was showing its age.

This is going to be a complete frame up build, ill be uploading pics as progress comes along.

the motor was removed prior to my interest in the bike, so that made things a little easier :laughing

I pulled all the street stuff off since I wont be using any of it.

Removed the wheels for powder coating, new bearings, captive wheel spacers, galfer wave rotors, and angled valve stems.

Threw on some crappy tires to have the bike mobile until I get some good rubber on there.

Im 6'4 220lbs so the suspension needed some upgrades. Forks got K-tech piston kit, .10 springs, motul factory line oil, fresh seals
Rear shock is also getting a k-tech piston kit, revalve and a heavier weight spring

considering how hot it gets at the track I got some DEI gold heat wrap, covered the entire airbox, freaking took forever!! also doing the bottom of the gas tank after its painted

while Jim at Catalyst was refreshing the motor I ordered a bunch of parts for the bike.

Whole bunch of parts waiting to go on once the motor is rebuilt:

Driven 14/43 sprockets
Woodcraft lever gaurds
all ballz Steering head bearings
Zero gravity corsa windscreen
Bmc air filter
Battery tender Lithium battery
Vortex rearsets
Leo vince/ akro full exhaust
Motion pro quick turn race
Blue silicone radaitor hoses
Smog block off plates
Woodcraft keyless ignition
Anti-slosh tank foam
DEI gold heat shielding gas tank
2008 fairing stay
Eti fuel tank covers

I got a used leo vince full system minus the can for 200 bucks from a buddy. The can is a carbon akro off my zx-10. Im thinking its going to be too big to fit, diameter wise, lenght is fine. If that can doesn't fit I have a Sato GP can that should.

Got the motor all done. All new bearings throughout, valve job, thinner head gasket and degreed the cams. motor will be tuned on 91 and u4.4 race gas

Got the Bazzaz Fi, Qs, Tc all connected, battery tender lithium ion battery, blue silicone radiator hoses, 520 driven 14/43 gearing and chain.

Heat sheid covered airbox and bmc race filter also installed.

got the exhaust mounted up, hopefully the can doesnt deck out on the ground

also picked up a set of ETI tank sliders in hopes the bike wont blow up when it falls down

Realized I cut my chain too short, so I added another link to the chain. Long wheel base makes the bike less twitchy.

I picked up a light on\off switch to use as my map switch for the bazzaz system.

Made a bracket to relocate the reg/rec. A lot of racers mount them to the frame but I dont like how hot they get. The bracket has 3 layers of gold reflective heat tape. Reflects 80% of constant heat of 850 degrees and can take brust of heat up to 1500. So im sure it will do fine in this location.

It's also mounted on quarter inch spacers to aid airflow to the backside of the reg/rec

Bike left for dyno tuning at fastline, fingers crossed it makes good power.

Got a used set of plastics from Bassem, brought them home to do all the repair work. quite a few cracks and chips from a full season of use and a crash. I knew i could fix them, just had to find the time

After final dyno tuning the bike made 118 rwhp, nice strong power curve, while remaining reliable.
Motul 300v oil change, fresh pirelli supercorsa tires and installed that beat up bodywork. sadly there wasnt enough time to get the bodywork painted.

Buttonwillow track day for its first shakedown.

Day started out wet with scattered showers, dried up in the afternoon, got down to 2:05's.
Not bad considering its the first time out on this bike, half the track was still wet, and I havent rode buttonwillow since 2008.
Long way to go till I hit competitive times, but it was a good start to the season.

with some more down time I removed the fairings for more prep work and to get them ready for primer. all paint work will be done by Robert at MotoGloss Paint

after all the primer was shot I sanded it all smooth to get it ready for paint.

Got the bodywork home and fit it to the bike

also applied the heat sheilding to the gas tank, looks like a treasure chest when you lift the tank up :laughing

off to see Mike at Ace Custom Graphics, he has been creating stickers for me for years. Mike also did all the vinyl work on the fail bike.

The gold gilding reminds me of this:

Tomas, awesome thread, thank you for posting. I am just curios what type of work Jim performed on the engine as a part of a "refresh" project.

I am getting the same k-tech piston kit for the forks; Nickie placed an order for my r1(07) last week.

Good luck racing.
